I have a 98 ranger xlt 2wd 4cyl. I have cleared this code but it comes back after about two days. The truck runs fine. I had the code pulled at autozone. It is "P0171 left bank lean." All fluid levels are normal and up to date. I have 131K miles on this truck. They told me running fuel injector cleaner through it might clear the problem. Does this sound right? If so what's a good brand to use? Thanks in advance.
Personally, I like the Chevron brand (Techron) that comes in the pump fuel as well. YMMV
EDIT: I couldn't remember the name of the additive but checked the website and Chevron has a $2.00 rebate as well if you want to spend the time, stamp and filling-in the blanks
I have looked and listened and can't seem to find any leaks. Are there common problem areas that I should be aware of? I have noticed on the board that the PCV valve seems to be a common problem. Could this be related. Your help is appreciated.
Checking the seal of the PCV valve/grommet is a good idea, as a breakdown in that are could potentially allow unmetered air into the system. Which kinda leads to the next question ...has your engine been idling OK?
If you ran the injector cleaner thru it and it went from 2 to 5 days, I would guess the problem might be the injectors. What do the spark plugs look like? A vacuum leak is a big possibility, especially if the engine is not idling well. A guage is pretty cheap and easy to use. It's worth the investment of 10-15 bucks.
