I dont know how to explain how I would feel about having to solder and work on my idm or pcm. So I will be blunt. If I had to choose between either fixing one of those electronics on my own with solder and what not vs getting rid of the truck. Well, bye bye truck. I do almost all my own stuff, but will never bother trying to repair an idm/pcm etc.
I don't think the knowledge being publicly available would threaten their business because, as you say, there's an amount of skill and gumption required.
Fair. But I suggest the vast majority of their value comes from having the experience and tools to diagnose what in the heck is wrong...on top of having the skills to replace it and THEN re-test it all over again to ensure it's good.
I took a step back when I got the quote from DTC for my PCM repair...but then when I found out what it was, and how he found it, and then how he repaired it...yeah, I'd'a never been able to do that, even if you gave me a YouTube video on how to look for it. It was worth it.
So that's why I think the info is not out there. Not because their withholding information, but because the vast majority of us just can't handle the truth... And then we'd bother them constantly for more info. I don't blame them.
Challenge yourself to figure out what's wrong with this PCM. And I'll give you a hint: it's highlighted for you. I'd'a never found it...

Well said, if you don't mind me asking , how much does it cost to repair something like that? I'm sending in my PCM to DTC once I get my other truck sorted out so was just curious.

Oh I wasn't suggesting some kind of conspiracy to within information, rather that other parties hadn't explored and documented.

Looks like a fractured solder joint. Reflow should do the trick(?)

Fractured solder joint -- at the pin barrel (upper right). I was getting the MAP sensor error, but only when stone cold and only during the start cycle (key on start). Drove me frgiggin bugnuts. DTC reflowed all the joints and I've not had any issue with it since.
Now I'm getting an IDM error, so I'm sending both to him for review. Just need to get off my a** to pull them (it's still cold here in CT.)
