Transmission confusion

I've got an 1984 f150 4x4 with a 351w and a dying c6 i wanna put a manual in it and not lose the four wheel drive is this possible? If so what transmission should i go with preferably capable of towing a bit
*Edit* i don't mean to be a bother and this is just the first of many questions for this forum

Welcome to FTE

You can swap to a manual and not loose 4x4 as the trucks came from the factory that way thing is finding all the parts & bits to make it happen.
Your best bet would be to find a complete manual 4x4 truck and put the 2 side by side to swap parts over from.

With that said if going through all that I would look for a manual 4x4 truck with a 5sp w/ over drive for everything but the pedals.
So there will be some mixing of years for parts. Any 80-86 manual 4x4 parts* would be a bolt in to your truck as a whole.

Note* in 83 or 84 trucks went to a hydraulic clutch and the pedal assy. changed to make this happen. The 87> trucks the 5sp would come from the pedal assy will not fit the later 80 - 86 trucks.

On the 5sp trans if you do a search you can find the years to look for. You will need the 4x4 transmission w/ shifter, clutch master / line / slave, cross member, floor cover pan. I believe your transfer case will bolt to that transmission but may have to deal with the shifter for the transfer case?
The good thing being you have a 4x4 it opens up the years for the 5sp as the later years did not have speedo cable holes, yours is in the transfer case.

You will also need a flywheel that is for your size motor as it needs to be balanced for it. You CAN NOT use a 302 flywheel (they came in 2 different weights also) on a 351 or other size motor.
You will also need a clutch kit that has disc / pressure plate / throw out bearing / pilot bushing or bearing.

I think that covers 99.9% and I am sure someone that knows more than me, that's not hard as I dont know a lot LOL, will post up more.

The 2 different 5sp transmissions are ZF5 can be hard to come by and the other M5ODR2 the easier one to come by.
When I was looking to go over drive I was looking for either one in a 4x2 and all I could find were 4x4 ones and think they were the M5ODR2.
Some info on the M5ODR2 https://forum.garysgaragemahal.com/M5odr2-td113983.html
Because my truck was a manual, granny first gear, and it is a back up to pull my open deck car trailer I wanted to keep the granny first.

So that meant if I wanted over drive it would have to be 1 of 2 add on units I could get at the time.
Gear Vender I felt was too much money and did not work the way I wanted it to. Will work with autos or manuals but not in 4x4 mode.
I went with Advance Adapter's Range Splitter over drive, a 3rd what GV was. Works only with manuals and can be used in 4x4 mode.
I could also split all gears turning my 4sp into a 8sp transmission not that you can used all gear as ratios are too close for some of them.

It was also one of the last they made and sold as they no longer make / sell it now and this was just before the virus hit so not long ago.
I am happy with the AA RS OD but have yet to use it to pull my trailer.
