Hello Everyone! I am looking for tires for my 2001 F350 4x4 and would appreciate some real advice. I've done lots or searches but I always get such good advice here!
I live in Northern Baja, so most of my driving is on the highway, or on kinda rough asphalt roads or on dirt roads. It rarely rains here (but when it does the road is usually washed out anyway) so mud isn't much of an issue. The chance that I would drive in snow is, a snow ***** chance in......well, you get it.
I don't drive the truck off-road much mainly because its so big and heavy. Most of the people down here have side by sides or buggies so if I get stuck there isn't anything big enough to pull me out.
I've got BFG All Terrains on it now, and they've been good tires but considering how I drive the truck these days is there a better option?
wow! that's a big price difference from everything else I've been looking at! Ill check those out too
Keep in mind you get what you pay for when it comes to tires. Especially if they are "off" brands.
Personally I really like the Cooper HT3. Great AT sand tires, quiet and wear really well. I used to run strictly mud tires and am quite pleased with how the HT3 performs. Cant beat the price for them either. Dont see it listed on the TireRack site but you also come in 285/75r16.
I have the Nexen Roadian AT tires on two of my pickups. One has 315/75-16s the other has 275/55-20s. Both are load range E.
Both sets balanced very well, are actually round, and are wearing pretty good. They're quiet and smooth (the road noise is completely masked by the beastly 7.3 in each).
Keep this in mind, though. You DO get what you pay for as stated above. The only reason I bought them (and why I typically buy cheaper tires in general) is because I MIGHT put 3000 miles a year on any vehicle in my small fleet. My tires "age out" before they wear out...typically. I have about 3-4 years left on these before retiring them to ranch duty but I park them off of the dirt on boards over the winter and through de-icing season so they have less propensity to rot out.
I've run mostly Toyo AT's for the past 25 years on all of my trucks. I did have a set of Toyo MT's on a rig and loved them for offroad performance but they ended up being priced out of my budget when I replaced them. My current set of AT's (315/75/16) is pushing 40k miles and I'll be replacing them this fall.
I recently resurrected an older thread about the AT3’s. Decided to go with them but haven’t purchased anything yet since the truck hides during snow season.
I like the quietness and on road performance of the HT3 but they don’t do well in wet grass etc. They do what I need by going to 4x4 but since the diesel covers up a little tire noise I figured something a touch rougher wouldn’t actually hurt the in cab noise level. Dad’s truck had some brand (General?) of AT’s and you couldn’t hear any tire noise, although his truck in general is louder than mine.
I understand the perils of going with an inexpensive off brand tire, but don't feel I need to go with a big name, big buck tire either.
I have ran cheap Ironman tires on my commuter car and really liked everything about it except the wear life. I found it to have very strong side walls and take potholes like a champ where “name brands” have cut the side wall under similar circumstances. Never cut one of the cheapies but have had multiple with various other brands. To be clear though, name brand for me is General, Cooper, Falken and the like.
The biggest issue I found and ultimately why I quit running after a couple sets was the way they wore out. It was a really good tire for 6 months or so until it became worn down some. Then it would basically stop wearing but become very slick in rain etc. Of course being me, I would continue to run until the actual tread would wear out. So first half of its short life was good but then the last half was sketchy.
Overall the cost per mile became similar to other brands. Since tires often get destroyed before wearing out, I think the shorter life wasn’t actually a bad thing being they were 1/2 the cost. It was how the last half of their life performed that made me give them up.
I know this doesn’t really play into anything truck tire related but I’m sitting on the couch goofing off so why not share the unneeded information?
Ill throw in another option, Venom Power Terra xt hunter. These tires are essentially knock off BFG A/T's, as they have the exact same tread pattern. I have about 20k miles on a set now and they wear great and perform as expected. The only issue I have seen with them is sizing. I don't think they make stock rim size tires.
On several tire rankings, even consumer reports, the nexen tire rank well above toyo, cooper and others. They are far from a cheap off brand tire, they just dont mark up their prices stupid high to make up for all the annoying and excessive advertising.
Then again I absolutely hate most of the tires that seem to be popular right now
