A few updates...

Hello again…

People say we should share our good and our bad moments with our friends, so here are a couple things I’d like to share with you…

I’ve worked a little bit on the truck, and took it to a few car shows…
One of them was quite a few miles away. Everything went fine, except for a defective head gasket. Yes, there was something wrong with the gasket itself, as the truck did not overheat or anything like that. The compression from one cylinder would flow into the one next to it, and both quit. We left home with 8 cylinders and came home with only 5 (I broke one spark plug trying to figure out what was wrong with it at the car show).
I took pictures of the car shows, and posted them in my gallery. (Have only 2 so far. Should have more soon).

I also took a few pictures of our daily driver.

And, due to lack of space, I had to sell my beloved ’73… That truck was a workhorse! I took the good 272 out of it, though.

Well, I guess that’s all for now. Sorry for the long and useless post…

Best regards,
Lobo

Hey, your post slipped under my radar, Lobo. Shame about the head gasket, but I liked the car show pics. Was the gasket just an old one when installed? I wonder about the NOS (new old stock) that people have for sale. I can't imagine that a gasket would fail because of age.
Hope you are back on the road and happy. Keep us up to date with what's going on down there. Best. himmelberg

Hi Lobo,
Your truck looks great!
Sorry to hear about your head gasket situation.

What year was that green truck you were parked next to at the show? Looks like it has a unique grille on it. Looking foward to more pics!

It looks like a '60 with a custom grill.

They are under "1962 F-100"(the 56). Lobo, again thanks for the pics of your truck. You seem to have quite a few of the 57-60 body's down there! You being the brazilian, photo's are a must!! I bet the sheetmetal is straight(ponders how much a 60 f-100 fender would cost to ship from there) -4speed

Thanks everybody for the replies. I'll try to answer your questions now... Well...

Himmelberg,

Nobody could explain what went wrong with that head gasket. When we took the engine out of the car, it was running perfect, and the engine itself was in excellent shape... We drove the car for a few days before taking it apart, and nothing went wrong.... My best bet is that the previous owner must have overheated it at some point of its life, and it took a while, or a highway trip, for the hole on the head gasket to get wide enough to give us some problems... But, I'm not worried about that anymore. Luckily, there was no damage done to the head or the block. Just replaced the head gasket and everything is fine again.

Kenny,

That green truck is a 1965. That truck is 100% original. It even has a special license plate. If I'm not mistaken, it only has 35.000 miles on it. I can ask the owner more questions about it, if you want me to.

Mr4speedford,

You're welcome! But I think I'm the one who should say thank you... If you need anything else, just let me know... Those trucks, the 57-60 body style are very common down here, but 98.9% of them were converted to diesel engines at some point. It's extremely rare to find one that still has it's Y-block. I'm trying to find a F350 right now, but I haven't been able to find a single one with a gas engine.... By the way, you can find good fenders for those trucks, even some NOS fenders, but it will be very expensive... Sometimes you can buy the entire truck for the price of a NOS fender....

If I forgot to answer something... Just ask it again, please...

Best regards,
Lobo

Lobo,
What diesels were they converted to? Which ones are the best?
Curious,
Brett

Lobo,

Just to add to Brett's question.....Is there some sort of conversion kit available in Brazil for the diesel swap?

Thanks for the info on the '65! Would love to see some more pics of it, if you have them.

Brett,
There were several different engines used... These were the most common.

On the F100s, the earlier swaps usually used a 4 cyl. Perkins engine, and the latter ones used a 4 cyl. MWM engine. On the F350s and F600s the most common swaps were either a straight six Perkins or a straight six Mercedes (OM321 or OM352) engine. And, there were no kits available. The swap is not that difficult. The most complicated part is to make a few brackets and change the bell housing. If I'm not mistaken, you also had to re drill a couple holes on the bell housing to use the original transmission and change the location of the hoses on the radiator.

If I remember any other important information about these conversions, I'll post here.

Best regards,
Lobo

PS Kenny, I thought I had, I don't have other pictures of that green truck, but next time I see it, I'll take some more pictures and I'll send them to you.
