I have a '98 Mountaineer 5.0 302 running in a '94 Wrangler. The wiring is naturally a little dicy because I had to manually find and connect the pertinent circuits between Ford and Jeep. I've been trying to trace a parasitic draw for the last few weeks and I've finally found what it is. It's the VPWR circuit going into the ECM. The way it's attached right now is an "always hot" 12v feed straight from the PDC. I'm trying to find a wiring diagram that will show me where that 12v comes from in the original wiring. I'm wondering if it will work on an ignition only circuit. That would cut its power when the ignition turns off and fix the permanent draw but I don't want to risk damaging anything... any suggestions? Thank you!
So I found another thread that suggests that the VPWR circuit is an ignition circuit (start and run only). I have been powering it with an "always hot" circuit, and it seems like as long as that port in the ECU has power it will draw. So I'm going to move change it to an ignition controlled circuit and that will solve my issue!
I'm assuming you have the 104-pin computer?
PIn 55 Battery+, KAP 12V+, should be powered all the time, otherwise you will erase the Keep Alive Memory(KAM) every time you power off. Pin 71 VPWR, IGN 12V+, run and start power.
Pin 97 VPWR, IGN 12V+, run and start power.
Do you know or have a picture of your EEC-V?
Specifically the code on the box that identifies the strategy, and the hardware code, something like RAAD3G5 and ML2-473
I'm assuming all 104-pinouts are the same/similar for power and ground, just don't want you connecting to those pins just cause I said so, can't believe everything you read on the inter webs.
wwhite, we're all good. The pins you called out matched my ECM pinout perfectly. Originally I supplied B+ power to all three of those pins so I knew that 12v into those pins is safe. I've now change the supply to IGN and as a result the parasitic draw has gone away because once the car is off those two VPRW circuits can't draw anymore. 302 is running well, keep alive is all good, etc. Thanks for your help!
