Fuel pump question

Hello I have a 1978 ford f250 4wd with the 351M. I am trying to find out if there is a way to check the mechanical fuel pump if the truck won't start. Thank you so very much for the help...

I would disconnect the fuel line where it meets the carb and see if you get gas coming out when you start it and rev it up.

The 1978 Ford Truck Shop Manual says the fuel pump for the 351M should make 6.0-8.0 P.S.I. with a volume of at least 1 pint in 20 seconds with temperature normalized, at curb idle speed in neutral.

If you just crack the fitting to carb, you should see gas when cranking. Unless you do as Ozzie posted and keep the fitting/hose in a container to measure output. This will prevent a lot of gas from dumping on the engine potentially.
The best thing to do is get a fuel pressure gauge also.
I had a mechanical pump putting out 3psi and after 10 minutes it couldn't pump anymore.
the gauge helped figure that out.
