Hey there ,
I just put a new clutch in my 56 f 350 After re-doing the linkage and equalizer bar, and motor mounts.
Removing and replacing the clutch and transmission went smoothly. We fired her up Saturday with dreams of putting around the block for the maiden ride.
But oh no. What we got was a god awful metal on metal sound when pushing in the clutch trying to put it in gear and it wouldn't go in gear at all.
The only clue I can offer is the clutch adjustment rod.I'm about out of threads, my buddy thinks I should thread another inch or so on the rod.
Anybody have a similar experience?
Clutch disc in backwards is what it sounds like . If it was a lack of adjustment pushing it in should not cause any grinding noises just an inability to put it into gear .
Hey EBEAR and FortyNiner , How sure are you? The thought of breaking it down again brings tears to my eyes.
I mean I'm the new guy , You guys are'nt giving me bad directions to the airport for laughs are you?
\There are a number of articles on this forum about "clutch won't work" issues.
Make sure you have the right clutch, throw-out bearing, installed the right way. If the clutch worked before you did a replacement then it should work now.
Guaranteed that a "replacement part" doesn't match up to what you took out.
I tried to use a diaphragm (Multi-finger) pressure plate in my 52 F-1.....wrong. The catalog company out of New York State said it was the correct one.............wrong.I needed the original 3-flinger pressure plate.

No I wish I were as fortyniner mentioned this is something I have also done but in any case it's almost certainly incorrectly installed or mismatched parts . I do sympathize with you as doing things for the first time can be quite exciting and or interesting but redoing them is very seldom that way .

Real sure because I did it twice. Learned on the first go and over-thought it on another build.
Hey ALBUQ F-1 yes I have the cover off . The release lever is engaged and moves the hub/bearing. My buddy thinks its just not moving enough, hence add more threads to the adjustment rod.
I may be in denial but I swear there was a sticker or stamp saying which direction the disc went

There is no reason for it to make noise if it's simply not enough adjustment . Yes new ones are normally marked but unfortunately that doesn't always guarantee success . It could also be wrong flywheel bolts but unfortunately I believe it's going to be a dismantle in any case .
To AVf100 I only makes the noise when I depress the clutch all the way , similar to when brakes are metal on metal, only worse sounding .
Its not gears grinding
You may have too much travel. Can you push in less, but enough to shift into gear, without grinding gears? Your release bearing or hub may be hitting the PP cover.
I had the damn clutch plate in correct! So for a second I was happy with myself that I wasn't that burnt out (old) I didn't put it in wrong dammit!
Then the realization that I still had my truck exploded and no idea what was wrong.I took the pressure plate to my parts guy to confirm that I had the right one installed.
I did but he mentioned to check out the throw out bearing, yea its new but sometimes they fail .
Sooo I had it in backwards all along, maybe I am old and a littlt burnt out. Well me and my bud put it all back together Saturday and took it for its first maiden drive
No doors, no rear glass, plywood seat, no tag no insurance (round the block) Man it was the best ever, a year and a month since we met.
I want to thank you all for the advice, nice to know I'm not alone.
