Hello, I recently bought an 82' f350 dump with a 400 and a 4 speed with PTO. Shortly after getting the truck on the road the 400 blew up I am looking to replace it with a used engine. I am having a hard time figuring out what other engines would be an easy swap as used 400's are pretty hard to come by in my area. I have heard that the 460's make significantly more power however I'm not sure if they share the same bellhousing bolt pattern or if it is easy to make/buy a set of motor mounts to do so. I'm looking for advice as to weather or not this swap is a good option for me and if not what other engines should I be looking for.
460 is a good swap, but lots of things to do. Bell pattern is the same but there are some differences for manual trans models, not sure about auto. Find a 460 with an automatic and bring the whole thing over.
Mounts, exhaust, cooling--your radiator may or may not cut it with the 460.
What is wrong with your 400? Rod out the side or something "simple"?
Right missed that. 400 bell on a 460 is a question though. I will try to search that out tomorrow. Pattern is the same but depth and crankshaft stick out might be the issues.

I have never done this swap, but I haven't heard of a bell problem with the manuals. I have heard of clearance issues with the automatics though.
The 460 should be a drop in as far as engine mounts though. Make sure you get a 460 from a mid 80's up truck, not a old LTD or something. The one from the truck will have the correct oil pan.
Would he need to deal with the oil filter as the cross member is not notched for it like on the 460 truck frames?
Easy fix with a remote filter.
