Okay get comfortable!
Installed DD efuel in ~October along with up-pipes, in tank mod, GP harnesses, Down pipe, wicked wheel and a few other odds and ends
After the install the truck ran “fine” I honestly couldn’t tell any performance difference pre and post install. But the truck needed other work so I never drove it that much, maybe into town to the store but no more than 10 min at a time.
I then took it on about a 1 hour drive and truck ran crappy and finally died, opened the hood, turned the key and my fuel pressure was at 20psi (I currently only have a gauge under the hood on the regulator)
I have dropped the mid ship tank twice and made sure the pickup shower head is solid and it was/is. It does not suck air.
Changed the selector valve (which had been out for a while, stuck on the mid ship tank) did an Amazon knock off.
I have bypassed the fuel selector valve all together, I have sucked/dumped diesel from a clean 5 gal bucket under the truck.
During all my tests, the truck would idle fine but once you gave it some umph you could feel the fuel pressure drop.
Each time the pre pump would be mostly empty and the post pump, when removing it would have tremendous pressure on it and would blow diesel everywhere! I thought that the return line would let pressure out of the system as soon as the pump stopped??
The common thread seems to be air in the fuel, before the truck was about to fart out I could hear the pump from in the cab cavitating.
I had the water/fuel separator on the pre pump side and while it was running I could burp the air out of the water separator until diesel came out and I could hear the pump quiet down and would run fine for another few minutes
I switched positions on the filters and the truck ran flawlessly! I could finally feel the effect of the other mods in the skinny pedal!
I took it on a 3 hour drive down the beach and the stupid thing did it again! Started cavitation in the pump, I was able to limp it home tho it didn’t die.
So I am at a loss! Have I damaged my Bosch pump? Has anyone put the water separator pre or post pump does it matter?
My next step is to get new filters and run fuel line from the top of the tank straight into the filter head just in case my selector valve is a dud and is sucking air from some place.
Im also thinking about getting a new Bosch pump in case I have damaged it somehow?
I know this is a ton to read and I’ve surly left out critical info, I’ll edit as I remember!
Having just converted to e fuel ( working on the writeup ) I'm very interested in following this
Having heard very mixed reviews of the bosch pumps, I decided to go with an airdog all in 1 unit.
Thats funny it was toss up for the Air dog and Bosch for me too.. my thinking, which may have been flawed, is that those Bosch pumps last years for the SD 7.3s so that’s good enough for me! But we’ll see how that works out!
I do alot of miles towing a trailer so reliability is key. the thought of being able to find a new pump almost anywhere was huge. however the geroter style pump should last much longer. the other big sell of the airdog is that it only requires one line running to the engine, and there are less fuel connections to leak.
it seems like the normal inline pumps don't like the restriction of pulling through the selector valve and the filter.
I ran a set of fuel lines from the top of the tank to the return line before the valve and the filter head. Completely bypassing any stock feed lines and all quick connections and the truck ran great, even a little better than after swapping the filters. Now to see how long that lasts! 🤞🏻
What fuel filters do you use Longworth?
