Connecting rod side clearance

Hello all, I am at a hold point on my 292 rebuild; I have torqued the connecting rods to the first torque setting (20 ft/lbs) and checked the clearance between the rods. Some spots I can get .002 to .005, other spots on the same journal are too tight for the thinnest blade on my feeler gauge. Rod assemblies are correct. The crank can be turned with little effort with a ratchet on the crank nut. The shop manual lists the ranges from .006 to .016 with run out exceeding .019.
My search of the forum did not find any previous threads involving this question.

Are you rolling the crank over once or twice to get the rods and piston straight before you check?

Did you ask in the Yblock engine section as well?

Don't have a manual for a 292 but all other V8's are .010- .020 side clearance. I would not put it together with less than .010 clearance. You have to have that clearance to let the oil out. If it is too tight it will burn up the bearings. Make sure the notch in the piston is forward and the tabs on the bearings are to the outside. The rods and caps should have had numbers stamped on them to indicate what hole they came out of. If they don't and no one stamped them, you may have to move them around to get the clearance you need.

X2, and when you torque the rods are actually twisting slightly..
