Radio/Touchscreen Issue

Hello,

I have a weird gremlin in my truck and was hoping someone could help me diagnose it. My truck is a 2018 F-250 XLT (no center console, but the large touch screen).

It’s started to adopt this habit that the touch screen will go black, with no power to the USB ports or the radio.

I used to be able to reset it frequently by doing a “soft reset” with the power and seek buttons. Now it’s getting much more unreliable. Every time I reset it, I see the blue glow flash around the USB sockets. And maybe every 50 reset attempts the Ford logo will flash and everything comes on.

But it seems like it’s getting worse. Now I have to get at least two full screen reboots in order for my iPhone to sync with the truck and listen to my music.

I originally thought this was caused by old batteries, so I had them replaced by Ford (who disconnected both batteries when replaced and didn’t fix this issue). Soft reset didn’t work, and I ran the codes and it’s not throwing any. Possible trouble areas: APIC, short in USB power bus, relay?

Any gurus that would share some light? Thanks!

Sounds like your APIM might be going bad.

How old is your battery? A little bit low and it drives these trucks nutz.

On edit: Reread your post, I see you did your home work. Still wonder about voltage levels like the new battery isn't being charged properly Once the radio is working, does it work for the rest of the day? If your voltage is good before starting the truck in the morning, then yes, I agree you got hardware issues.

I had trickled charged both batteries overnight so they were topped off before putting having them in the the truck. Not sure what their voltage levels are but I can check that.

If I get the screen to come on it stays on for a while. And if I shut the truck off, and then start it up, the screen will usually fire up again so long as it hasn’t been too long (maybe within 30 minutes). It’s such a weird problem 😂.

Yes, it does sound like the APIM is on its way out and believe it or not, it's a well know issue by most if not all Ford dealers going back to the 2016 F150 and yes, your 2018 has the same APIM.

With that being said, instead of doing a soft reboot, have you tried a Master Reset and do you know how to do one?

Also, have you checked Owner.Ford.com for a SYNC 3 software update for your VIN#

Thanks for the suggestion. It’s interesting they haven’t fixed it yet. If it is the APIM, what’s involved with replacing it? And no I’m not familiar with how to do a master reset.
