I need to replace my degas bottle. The last time I flushed the coolant I noticed that the external head of the plastic drain plug in the rad was gone. It's not a big deal as it still comes out with the hex internal.
I'm not aware of any aftermarket upgrades. I broke mine when I first bought my truck. The local auto parts store had a stock replacement for less than $10 I believe so I went with that.
With the inside hex, the wall is thin under the head. The head of the valve typically breaks off from stiction of the o-rings (excessive torque), or if you tightened the valve as though it seals better if torqued. The valve seals by the o-rings, so it doesn't have to be tight. I went through this on our test vehicles because some guys would overtighten them, and we had to get replacements.
In our SOP maintenance book, I wrote in to tighten the outer hex lightly until the head lightly touched the radiator, but always remove the valve by the inner hex with an 8mm Allen key or Allen socket. This way the high torque removal uses the stronger inner hex area.
it's kind of a weak ( literally) design. My 89z24 has a wing nut style and it's never let me down.
I have no idea where the outer part on the 6.0 went. Oh well. All will be solved for 5 dollars.
