Pre-Collision Assist: WARNING: In situations where the vehicle camera has limited detection capability, this may reduce system performance. These situations include but are not limited to direct or low sunlight, vehicles at night without tail lights, unconventional vehicle types, pedestrians with complex backgrounds, running pedestrians, partly obscured pedestrians, or pedestrians that the system cannot distinguish from a group. Failure to take care may result in the loss of control of your vehicle, serious personal injury or death. PRE-COLLISION ASSIST LIMITATIONS
Pre-collision assist depends on the detection ability of its camera and sensors. Any obstructions or damage to these areas can limit detection or prevent the system from functioning. and then there is this: Note: Brake support and automatic emergency braking are active at speeds up to 80 mph (130 km/h). If your vehicle has a radar sensor included with adaptive cruise control, then brake support and automatic emergency braking are active up to the maximum speed of the vehicle. So it seems the camera is involved. That probably explains why you can get a failure notice when starting up and a super dirty windshield. There are notes about this all through the section in the owner's manual about pre collision assist.
I wasn't sure the camera was involved. But it seems the camera is the primary sensor with the adaptive cruise radar system as a secondary system. There are explanations, notes, and warnings throughout the section on pre collision assist - including warning after warning about being responsible.
My truck has collision assist and doesn't have the radar sensor on the bumper. Only the camera on the windshield.
So what has been your experience with the system? Have you had warnings and if so with enough distance or time to react? My initial post was to find out what others have experienced as I have not had any warning braking while intentionally approaching objects or motionless cars at speed. Again thank you for your thoughts. It is not that I would rely on the system rather than being alert, but Ford suggests it is a great system and I would like to know that it is functioning as intended.
I think the safest thing to do is assume it will not save you. Drive like it is broken
I have had mine flash twice, both times when people in traffic have cut in too close on the highway, hold your breath close before the light comes on, never had it brake. Came around a corner on a hill where a car was stopped to turn left. I had to get hard on the brakes, system never did anything.
Pay attention to what your doing. I don’t like nor agree with all this new age adaptive crap basically puts you in a comfort zone that you don’t need to pay attention your car is for you. Bull**** its a computer and if you put you and your family lives in its hands you got issues. Sorry I might sound like a *** but dam people pay attention to what your supposed to be doing driving and you will ne good.
I second this. The very BIG danger is going from a car with all the bells and whistles (which allow you to drive distracted and save your ***) back to a normal vehicle that won’t brake to stop you from rear ending the car at the red light. This is just a warning, not personal to anyones driving styles

My experience thus far is that it would not stop you from rear ending the car at the red light anyway. By the time this particular system reacts, you are already crashing though maybe it could lessen the severity. If you wait for it, you will crash.
i have regular cruise in my 21
the emergency brake collision avoidance in my truck has gone off once and slowed the truck. i was coming up to a bend in the road and the oncoming truck was higher than me but in what the truck perceived as in my lane, as its a weird bend. the truck gave me a loud alert in the IP and slowed down, then went back to normal as soon as it started once the other truck came fully around bend in their lane
i had no idea it was in my truck. caught me off guard
The brakes on my truck did not apply but the warning came on once, when I was passing a car and an oncoming vehicle was coming at me. I decided at exactly at the same moment that this was going to be too close so I slowed and pulled in behind the car I was going to pass... I do wonder what would have happened if I went for it, and continued the pass as I do believe the pass would have been safely accomplished but it would have been closer than most people would like... What if the brake came on...
That idea of a vehicle braking on it's own in a passing situation must have occurred to the engineers, but is a scary thought....wonder how that is avoided in any collision avoidance system?

It can not and does not account for all traffic situations. That is the problem. The system on my wifes VW was downright dangerous. I had an STX ordered to avoid it but ended up with it when I changed to an XLT. That VW would jack the brakes and light up the dash when someone turned left out ahead of you, or to the right. Safety feature my a$$. I only went to the XLT with the knowledge I could turn it off if I wanted. It is really unobtrusive so instead of looking at the warning every start up that I have disabled it, I leave it on.

my wifes 2012 edge would occasionally apply braking if your passing on the highway, you are in left lane and the truck is in right. flat scares the doo doo out of you
it also has the red LED heads up thing in dash by window and they get your attention
we took it in a few times to inquire why it was doing this
i found at home once i removed the plastic trim panel that protects the unit, it had bugs and dirt on the sensor unit. so now if she tells me it does it, i go 1st and clean behind the trim protection panel.
but for a 2012 its pretty darn good
my truck has alerted me of collision like i mentioned, but i assume ti applied brakes because truck slowed abruptly
Adaptive cruise uses radar, if you have only standard cruise then you have no radar and the forward collision warning system is dependent on camera alone. Not sure what limitations are on camera system alone and dealership doesn’t seem to know.
Not sure if this has been answered yet but, where is the camera for this feature with standard CC?
