I got a call from a nice guy that lives in my area that saw my truck and phone number and called about a misfire on his 2000 f350! I went over this morning and found the uvch unplugged on the passenger side! I did a buzz test and only driver side buzzed and got a code for high side open bank one. Sure enough, connector completely unplugged. Going to do the 25 cent mod. I think he might be in a bit of a bind so I'm probably doing it just to pass on all of you guy's kindness to me! I need money and took time off work to help him but, I figure you guys have done the same for me a bunch of times so, I'll be ok!
Anywho I thought it was cool to meet him and told him about writing on the forums should he need help! It's cool to meet other 7.3 owners in my area!
I got him back on the road! He said he's been out of his truck for a month and needed it. He ended up giving me $70. I didn't ask him for any money but, that's what he gave me. I feel like that may have been a little bit much. At the same time I did take pride in what I was doing and do everything properly and, I taught him about everything I was doing and how to use forscan. The under valve cover harness fixed the problem. 25 cent mod for the win! His truck sounded good! I still feel like I should go back and give him some of that money back though. I feel bad. Yeah I know a shop would have charged way more than that. I did get really nasty and had some trouble with a few things that haven't been off in a while. I'm trying to make myself feel better about it! In this process I also made a friend. We're planning on going mullet fishing soon and I'm going to teach him how to throw a cast net! Overall it was a good day!
Give him back $69.75 - after all, the fix cost you a quarter! ;-)
Well technically yes. But I called off work at my job today to go help him so realistically it would cost me more but, I still feel bad though. It's not like it was that difficult. I'mma call / text him and see how he feels about it.
If he gave you 70 bucks without you asking, keep it. You took off a days work, he doesnt wanna feel like a mooch, its all good. Trying to give it back may insult him🤷🏻♂️
You earned the money. He was showing his appreciation for your help. It would have cost a fortune at a shop. You missed work to help him out. All’s fair, you deserve it.
How many shops have been talked about over the years that take people's money and don't fix the problem? Lots. I can't count how many times I've read "the shop told me it was a bad injector".
On the flipside he probably is wishing you could have given him more. Standard rate 'round these here parts is $150/hr for mechanic labor at a shop. For less than 1/2 that price you diagnosed his issue, fixed it, and taught him something.
I'm pretty sure that took more than 25 minutes so in the end he came out ahead, you feel good about helping someone out, and you got some beer money in your pocket (although you did lose a workday).
Never underestimate the power (and appreciation) of experience:
Sounds more than fair to me for the money. I had to go research the 25 cent mod.. Added it to my 7.3 "no cell service" note list. I'll prep some quarters and add em to my on board prep kit no doubt.
