1997 automatic transmission

1997 f350 e4od? New owner.
truck jolts when hitting gas or letting off of gas. Checked and trans mount is blown. Truck will buck at certain times with a light throttle around 30-45, speed varies but now when letting off throttle or giving it full throttle. shakes pretty bad around 60 and 70 mph. Also noticed if I grab the tail shaft and shake it it moves up and down a little. When driving the harder I accelerate the 1-2 and 3-4 shift will kind of buck. Fluid is not new but not burnt. Is this trans about to blow? Is the tail shaft play normal at all?

Sounds like multiple problems.

The trans mount should be replaced and check the U-joints.

The bucking is most likely bad signaling reaching the ECU. The E4OD is completely controlled by the ECU.

There are many threads about it here for extra detail but basically, the speed sensor comes from the rear end to the PSOM (Speedometer) then to the ECU. The most common problems are the speed sensor and PSOM not providing a good signal. If the speed needle bounces you need the PSOM rebuilt.

I’m doing the mount after work, what about a little bit of play in shaft combing out of trans. Up and down, not much but I can here a little ding when I jolt it

Assuming that is with the yolk still in the trans, that's not good. The tail housing bushing and likely the yolk will need to be replaced. This problem can be caused by bad u-joints. It will cause noise and vibrations. If not fixed, it will eventually kick the rear seal out dumping all the trans fluid.

You didn't say if this was 2x4 or 4x4. If it's a 4x4 the transfer case will need the bushing replaced.

Update. Replaced the bushing seal and mount and not as bad but still wobbles. When I had the tail house off I grabbed the output shaft and was able to wiggle that, is that normal. Have not driven yet though because my carrier is shoot and didn’t grab one.
