Also look up T5 install (start to finish) alot of good information. I did look at the hog head adapter but couldn't find one until I purchased the bellhousing I used.
Excuse me if this has been taken up before but I couldn't find anything with the search. Has anyone converted their original 3 speed to a late model 5 speed behind their Flathead V8? Seems I heard this had been done years ago but I wasn't in the position to do it at the time. Now I can't seem to find anything just automatics. Would like a 5 speed that comes out through the floor like original if possible. Thanks
Howdy,
I have not done a flathead to trans adapt. I have done a Y-block to Ford E4OD adapt and the company that I got the adapter from does do Flathead to "other" transmission adapters.
I think the perfect (manual) transmission to put behind a flathead would be a ZF 5 or 6 speed transmission Otherwise, I would do an AOD/AODE/E4OD/4R100

What is somewhat unique about the T5's is that they didn't have an integral bellhousing. That allows use of the flathead "hogshead" for the clutch actuation, which greatly simplifies things. I'd guess the ZF's all have integral BH's, which would mean some kind of thin adapter plate plus a hydraulic clutch system. Flatheads really don't need a lot of gears.

I learned that yesterday at my friends transmission shop. He actually had a s-10 trans in his boneyard. So hes going to open it up and see what condition its in. He said it was for 4 wheel drive which open up another thought. I have always wanted to do a Marmon Herrington replica with that truck. I've just have never got to it. I do beg to differ on flatheads not needing alot of gears. It depends what your doing with them. When I bought my 51 32 years ago it was my only tow truck at the time. Even with a rebuilt motor and a few hop ups done it really could have used a 5 speed on many occasions.
I am pretty sure any 4x4 trans out of an S10 will be an NV3500, which was used behind the V6's. I doubt it will adapt to a flathead without some special work.
edit: Sorry, if the S10 is pre-'96 even if it is a 4x4 the trans would be a T5. The New Venture's started in '96 for all S10's.
