I was surprised to find some rust damage in my core support. I know for a fact this truck has never been registered or stored outside of CA ... and I live in a desert! How did this happen?
It happened because of salt in the soil. A common problem in the desert southwest if driven on dirt roads. Especially around irrigated farmland.
You are doing good work. Keep posting here. The shrinking disc you made is the hot ticket. Appreciate that you are just rolling up your sleeves and getting to it. Not a better way to learn and inspire others to jump in and do the same.
When last heard from my 352 was sittin' on a two legged engine stand because a 2" steel wheel snapped right off the thing! At 1st I was gonna do my usual brick s-house engineering on a new stand ... but then I remembered I'll have to pick it up and stick it on a motor while it's hanging from a chain. So I settled for some bigger wheels.
Harbor Freight says the combined load rating of all 3 is 1080 lbs. It still takes some effort but it rolls fine now.
The other problem I was having is it was way to top heavy. Turning it upside down was just about outa control. This led to some clearance work, drilling, and notching of the mount to get it as high as the bell housing bolts would allow. It still takes bracing your leg for good pull to rotate it, but it ain't wantin' to fall on it's own anymore. I can use it.
So now it's time to prep for paint, which seems to be all I've doing in one place or another for the past 2 months! Hopefully I'll be painting something soon .....
I thought I had this engine stand worked out, but as I was turning the motor around for this and that I realized the front of the motor seemed to be getting lower? That poor thing was twisting where the 4 bolts hold the 3 tubes together! Not good ... One bolt snap and who knows what?
So I welded it up. It'll never come apart again now! I also added some triangulation.
I thought my shop was pretty well equipped ... Until I met this FE!
I just bought a Edelbrock aluminum intake for mine Was going to put the cast iron 4bbl back on but I seriously did not think my engine stand could take it.......I know my back could barely take it! ....Those suckers are HEAVY!!!!
