I have a 79 f-150 with a 400 and c6 trans.
the person I bought the truck from thought it was a 460.
the dip sticks look like bb dip stick the oil tube mounting bracket is about 4 inches above the valve cover.
does any one know the correct dip stick lengths for the 400/c6 combo?
Did a quick search of ND's old posts this is the only one I came across. E1TZ-6754-C .. Dipstick Tube~fits 351M/400 ~ 1980/82 F100/350 & U150 (Bronco)
Try Mr. Gasket and Dorman I know they re-pop the ones for a 351C. Any tubes OEM or re-pop may not read correctly without trimming the tube or re-marking the stick.
Okay I have the measurements of both the oil and C6 trans dipsticks. Engine oil Engine oil Engine oil I will get the measurement for the full line later today. C6 Transmission dipstick Transmission Transmission
The dipstick and the tube have to be a match. Don't know how many different dipsticks and tubes there were for a 400. But I do know that there were dozens of different ones for a C6 depending on what vehicle they were in and the engine they were bolted to. If you mix them up, they won't read correctly. On a C6 the fluid needs to be just above the pan rail idling in park with the fluid warm.
On the 351Clevelands all the engines used the same pan stamping. The 351 Boss was a 6qt fill and the others were 5qt. the only difference was Ford used a different dipstick in the Boss engines. I think the 400 front sump pans were the same stamping as the 351C's there is plenty of room in there for 6qts. without getting anywhere near the counterweights.
Makes sense to me, thanks Crop Duster. Just for clarification I have the 78 Bronco version 351M-C6 combo. Here are the follow up pics for the dipsticks. 351M front sump C6
