Howdy. Looking for a little help or advice? Restoring my 57. A friend gave me a 460 with a c6. The power plant came from a 1978 motorhome with 22k miles on it.
I actually drove the motorhome to my shop for disassembly. Motor ran strong and transmission shifted great.
I got her out and bolted in with slight modifications to the firewall.
Anyway my plan was to replace the distributor with an HEI and the intake manifold with a Weiand Stealth.
The distributor was frozen and had to be removed in pieces. Now I am pulling the motor and dropping the pan!!!!
I was going to do some engine upgrades later but guess I will do them now.
I was looking at doing a moderate cam upgrade but not sure? Anyone got some good ideas that won't break the bank?
You will not need too much to get some power from the 460. There is a site just for the 385 series engines which is a good guide. One thing that is cheap to help it is opening the exhaust ports, look inside the port and you will see a raised section that can be easily ground out with or without the valves removed. Be sure to use the premium timing chain set for the early 429-460. I could go on but just spend some time on the site where there is a lot of good information.
Thanks. I am looking at a Comp cam kit from Summit racing. It has the .494 lift. I watched a video regarding the grinding your talking about. Looks pretty straight forward.
You said you are going to use a stealth intake. Not sure if you plan to use that on the street. That intake is good for racing at the track, not on the street. Get a dual plane high rise, good carb, and headers. Make sure you change the timing gear and chain. The later 460's had the engines detuned from the factory because they couldn't pass emissions. So, they retarded the cam timing. Make sure you time the new gears straight up and down and not retarded.
2Xs on the above post. What you really need is Edelbrock # EDL-2166 from Summit. The manifold will work with the current spread bore carburetor that probably is on the 460 already. If you want a different carburetor then a 750 cfm Holley will be all you will ever need.
You've received some great advice from the community. We agree with the community on the intake. If you're looking for power/torque from idle to 5,500 look at the Edelbrock EDL-2166.
Going off the lift you provided for the Comp cam we think you're talking about the High Energy CCA-34-227-4. Specs on it are .494/.494, 218/218, 110+4 with -2* of overlap. If that's the one, we like it for a combo like you're building here. A street/weekend cruiser with a broad power range that will have a nice idle to it but will be easy to get along with. It will work well with the EDL-2166 intake manifold. You could get away with more of a stock exhaust system. However, a set of headers and a free-flowing exhaust will help get the most out of the cam.
The nice thing about Comp is they offer a variety of combo kits to help with the install of the cam. Anything from Cam and lifter kits to complete kits with springs, retainers, locks, seals, and a timing set. For all of the available Comp 34-227-4 kits check here.
