I have a 75 F-100 with a C-4 trans. I was changing transmission filter and ended up with a spring and a valve-like thingie left over. I think it was in the body of the trans above the filter. a friend said just to leave it out. According to him, Ford used in manufacturing and assembly for the fluid filler, but it is not needed now. Several years ago, another friend said it needed to be in the transmission. If it should be there, which goes in first, the spring or the 'thingie'? Help.
Install Spring and then Slug, small end to spring. Easier if you hold filter with the one larger 3/8" bolt and rotate over opening as you hold spring & slug. Then put in other smaller bolts. Just did this yesterday on 1979 F100 302 &C4.
I stand corrected: big end of "throttle pressure limit valve" inserted first into valve body with the spring following on the small end. Spring held by filter lip. Inserting other way causes major shuttering problem under acceleration. Follow Chilton diagram in link above. Sorry for my misleading you.http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Chilton...76CH01_28.html
