Fuel Pickup

Hey all,

I’m a bit out of touch with the community and am wondering if there’s a better fix for the recurrent broken fuel pickups than just perpetually replacing them. I need to do mine again and wanted to ask before doing the same thing and hoping for a different result. I did read where someone notched some fuel line and wrapped it with a metal screen which seems very plausible but I’m iffy on actually doing it.

Thanks in advance…

Most guys who ditch the rubber “shower head” filter screens use compression fittings to extend the hard pickup line down to the bottom of the tank. Then they run a replaceable filter somewhere between the tanks and engine to catch any debris.

There are some good photos of this approach in post 86 and 118 of user Khan's thread here:

And he pointed out to me an option of adding a frame-mounted filter (in lieu of problematic in-tank strainer) mentioned in this link in the Super Duty thread:

I’ve got the compression unions and hard line. I have a pre-pump filter but thought about adding the little transparent inline filter before the tank selector as well. Is that needed? And if so, are the hoses between the hard lines and tank side of the selector 5/16” or 3/8”?

When i converted to the single 38gal rear tank, i bought a new sender and did not have any portion of the "shower head". I ended up buying a 1 foot length of rubber tubing designed to be submerged in fuel and used it as a "dip tube". I secured one end of it to the senders feed tube and the other end got trimmed with small reliefs so it cant suction itself to any flat surface. When i installed the sender, i made sure it sat at the bottom of the tank. Its been working perfectly fine for about 800 miles so far. Ive gotten the tank down to less than 30% fill without issue.

Look into Gates submersible fuel line if youd like to go that route. This is specifically what i bought:

I just run mine without the strainer. I know I'm not getting every drop of fuel out of the tank but I'm also not risking anything because the pickup is an inch or so from the bottom of the tank. I've been happy with it that way for about a year now (knock on wood).
