83 F100 starting issues HELP!!!
recently my F100 has had some issues starting. it started when the truck would idle for around 20 mins or more and i would stall. Once stalled and trying to start it would be stubborn and just crank but not fire. after letting it sit for a few mins it would then stutter to crank then fire right up. This has recently gotten worse to the point where sometimes it will fire right up on a cold start or just click. I unfortunately broke the starter solenoid while trying to clean and reconect the battery and starter cables and ended up replacing the solenoid but still have the same issue. this afternoon i jumped in and the engine cranked over and eventually started but was running to rich and stalled. after that it would not start again even after trying to jump it. after many attempts to start it, the engine neglected to crank and the starterer just ticked.
I have eliminated the solenoid as the issue so what could this be? dosent seem like a battery issue since i have charged the battery a few times. bad starter? bad ground? maybe bad starter cable (it is extremely stiff). or could it just be that i need to clean the connection on the starter that does look a tad rusty
What brand starter relay (aka solenoid) did you install? Some are pure junk, right out of the box:

As far as the battery, thank you for charging it. Maybe all my soapbox time on the subject finally paid off. However, even after charging, there's no guarantee the battery is good. It could have one foot in the grave and be incapable of delivering the massive rush of electrons needed to properly spin the starter.
Ten minutes to read and five minutes with a voltmeter and you will have your answer why the starter system is not working properly.:

You may have more than one fault active, such as something else causing the stalling. But even if the engine won't run, the starter system should be able to consistently get the crankshaft spinning at the proper speed. Take care of this active fault first and with any luck the stalling will also be fixed. But if not, you can troubleshoot that separately after taking care of the most obvious problem.
the solenoid is a YIHE (cheep china crap). Since installed it has fired up a couple times without a jump but is completely random. sometimes itll start and ill drive it it and its fine until i try and start it again. and then sometimes it just cranks and wont start. given where i live i am driving over very bumpy rock and dirt roads all the time and lots of salt in the air im hoping its a bad connection. but with a limited knowledge of engine mechanics im definetley going to take your suggestion and explore with the voltmeter.
thank you, and im open to any more insight you can offer!
Ah…
Two options here, whether or not this component is responsible for the present situation:
1) Get a comfortable pair of walking shoes. Wear them for a few days to break them in so they will be comfortable when needed. Store them in the cab of the truck, along with a coat, hat, and water bottle. That way you will be all set for the long walk home when (not if) your shiny new Fling Dung relay leaves you stranded somewhere.
2) Get a sturdy shovel and start digging in your backyard. Don’t stop until you smell sulphur and brimstone. Drop the relay in the hole and backfill the dirt. Pour a concrete patio slab over the spot so you are never tempted to dig it back up. Then revisit that link I gave you and select a brand others have reported as working well.
What really matters is the voltage reading under the load of the starter. It is perfectly normal for the voltage to dip under such a massive load, but a healthy fully-charged battery should hold above 10.0 volts with the starter engaged.
If you have any doubts about the battery condition, take it to any parts store for a free test. However, measuring the voltage under load of the starter is a valid test, too.
Make sure it's top of the line as they also list a cheaper one.
Also make sure it is grounded good to the inner fender and the fender to battery.
Once we can get it to crank over every time we can then move on to the no start
