Does an open thermostat increase gas consumption?
It's cool in Minnesota now and temp gauge barely moves above "C". Passenger compartment is warm enough to get by. I have no problem with that. Typically mileage is 18 to 21 MPG. Now I barely getting 17 MPG. Therein is my question.

Winter gas blends(more ethanol) typically result in a loss of milage, but added to that are longer warmup times and thicker powertrain lubricants which produce more drag and also reduce milage. A winter grill cover can help the motor warm up faster and maintain that heat especially when doing a lot of highway driving. When I had a 4cyl Ranger a winter grill cover was manditory or the motor would loose all heat and even the in-cab heat would go away when driving on the highway. I made a rad cover for one of them, it was just a piece of 1/8" ply painted black that covered 2/3 of the rad and was held in place with a couple brackets.

Stuck open ThermoStat causes engine to never fully warmup, that in turn cause PCM to enrich Fuel/Air mix,
that in turn causes bad gas mileage & eventually damages CatCons as they run too hot burning up excess fuel.
For this V6~4.0L~SOHC engine, stock factory ThermoStat is rated 192f 89c.
Tried various ThermoStats, found ratings of 180f or less are unstable = Temp bouncing up\down.
Ended up with a 183f 84c ThermoStat, that keeps engine slightly cooler at 183~185f. Click here for more info.
