My wife wound up looking over my shoulder this morning asking what I was tapping out on the computer. I simply said I was exploring options due to my horrible experience in the weather yesterday. I got the look. We all know that look. Should have known better than to try to explain my way out of it. I just dug myself in a bit different. She's like you just put these tires over the summer didn't you... I simply stated these things were like ice skates yesterday and I never felt the truck.was in control I would hate be in an accident because of them. She goes accident huh? How bout you ride on these tires alot longer and we will think about it after the winter. It also dawned on me while we were on vacation these same tires got us stuck on some 4 inch crushd stone in which was used for a parking area in Acadia National Park. I had to drop the air pressure to 40 PSi to get the truck off the stone and back on the road. Yet other vehicles were on the same crushed stone and no issue getting off including a couple of other 1 ton trucks. I should have known then.

I am looking at a couple of options.

1) Keep the current tires and drop the air pressure to around 50 PSI for winter. Whatever mileage I got now, is also out the door.
2) Keep the tires on the truck. until worn out.
3) Buy another set of Coopers. Hope I get better life out of the tires than I did in the first set I had in 2014.. Unfortunately I will only get a few hundred for the tires on an on line platform. It would offset some of the costs getting the tires though.

My truck is on winter #3 with Michelin Defender LTX tires and they have never felt unstable with even 4" of snow. Slush.....no problem. Can't beat the smooth quiet ride, either.

The large amount of sipes that these tires have makes a big difference in the snow.

Sipes rule until the snow gets super deep.

Michelins on my wife's car has been pheomonal tires. On my truck. I had then on both the F250 and F350. They were alright. They came on the set of rims I bought for the 250. Rode on them until I could buy new rubber. Same thing on the 350. However, I nearly got stuck on grass one time with them. while i was camping. However I got the truck and trailer out. I think there was a layer of morning dew on the ground.

Neither here nor there, I am going to give the Coopers another try. I spent the afternoon watching videos on several different tires reviews. There were a number for long term usage on heavier trucks. If they are legit, I never saw that kind of wear on mine at the same mileage. A few videos were showing 30,000 plus mile wear reviews. Also my family and I are planning several off road type trips over this year. It would be nice to have something that is more agressive for those trips.

I did find out why my wife did give me a look about it. It turns out she is planning spring break in April. Our daughter was invited into a high performance sports program. There is an upfront fee once the program annouces who the attendees are this week. This fee is to secure her spot on the roster. Once we know, we can also book flights, lodging and rental car for after the event. The wife just wants to make sure the trip costs are covered first before the tires on the truck. I did laugh at the fact, she told me I had the sell the tires almost ASAP once I got the new ones installed. I said that was the plan. Tonight I applied for a store card to one of the local tire centers. I can float the cost over a couple of months instead of up front. Making everyone happy.

Probably call the local tire shop up tomorrow to schedule the tires. Will report back once done.

I plowed snow commercially for 8 years. Ran Goodyear Duratracs. I don’t have a bad word to say and are severe weather rated. Got stuck once and it was my fault not the tires. If you are looking for a tire that’s great in the snow and an all around great tire I would take a look. They don’t last as long as others but performed extremely well with the 3 sets I have had.

Unfortunately I was caught up in a snow storm over a long travel with low tread on the duratracs. The two tires appear nearly identical however perform differently. Regardless of the tire you select check out your primary size than find a couple similar sizes. Going to save 140 per tire on my next set increasing the diameter and decreasing the width both measurements under .5 inches. Essentially the same tire as far as I’m concerned.

Update....

Tires on order. Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT. Stock size 275/70 R18. Should be in on Thursday afternoon. I might have some free time that afternoon if work goes right. I might be able to get them installed on Thursday night since we are expecting wintry weather on Friday. Good test for the tires if that is the case. It's a good thing I called up about the tires. Since I called in to the tire center as a previous customer, I was able to qualify for a discount. Basically it's $25 off a tire which is nice given the fact these suckers cost 285 a piece. The discount basically covers the install with a little left over for the tires. 0% for 6 months works for the wallet. I can just float the bill for 3 to 6 months if needed. Better than all at once out of pocket.

I shall see how it goes.

Stock size. 275/70R18 Stock 3.73 gearing. Add in the fact the truck is used to tow. I am not sinking money into a regear.

We have Mavis Tire all over the place up here in New Jersey, New York, and many parts of the east coast.

Agreed. They aren't the best snow/ice tire I have ever driven, but they have been decent for me in the long Wisconsin winters.

I just pulled the trigger 3 weeks ago on General Grabber A/Tx's. 265 70 17 in LRE, all 4 mounted, balanced, programmed into the truck, 850 at Mavis. I can plow in 2wd without much trouble now.

The tires got installed tonight. The local tire center was happy i could do it tonight since they had 4 techs on with no work. They were handled in about 40 minutes from walk in and walk out. Look great on the truck. Felt good for the short amount of distance of driving. No wheel spin which was odd. The tires felt good in the rain we are getting tonight. The tech air them up to 60 PSI. The one tech said if I needed to a few more PSI would not hurt when needed. As luck would have it, I was parked next to an F150 with same tires when I went to get some dinner. Tomorrow if the weather breaks, I will get a picture for the picture people.

Next order of business, get the goodyears up for sale on FB marketplace.
