Transmission blown?

So the truck growled when the wife was reversing yesterday and then would not back up at all. I went out to inspect and figured the trans was blown. Then I pulled the driveshaft to the rear axle and supported it. Then when I put the truck in reverse it spun freely so I thought maybe rear differential issues? Jacked up the rear axle on both sides and it spins freely too. Now I am back to thinking transmission? Any thoughts before I start researching transmission shops in north NJ?

With the driveshaft installed, will it roll in park, or does it hold? If it rolls in park the problem is either the transfer case or the rear axle. If park holds, the problem is in the transmission.

Thanks Mark, it does not roll with the shaft attached, so transmission it is then. I looked at dieslelsite per one of your older posts. Looks like they are having supply issues like so many others. Not sure what my best option is for rebuild then. Any suggestions? Typically I prefer to build back with the best parts for the task, we really only highway cruise for trips with almost no towing. I would gladly pull and replace it in my garage if I could source something that warranted that level. Ideally I wouldn't just have a local shop put in whatever they can find.

Call Brian’s truck shop for a rebuild that will last a long time. Mine has been great. I think he will ship you one and you ship your core back.

Thanks for the advice so far. I am heading to Level 10 Transmission Monday as recommended by the NJ chapter here. They are close to me and offer "bulletproof" units. With 180k on the stock unit I think this should last until my kids are out of school. I will confirm they will be using the typical upgraded parts and get the cost prior to proceeding.

Is there anything else what would be wise to address while the replacing he transmission? Something I may not be aware of?

Do you do any heavy towing with it? If so, maybe look into a torque converter that is better optimized for towing.
