center console lights

i have a 97 explorer, and both the bulbs for my fog light and rear defroster switches are out. i have never taken out the center console, i was wondering if anyone knows how to replace the bulbs. if anyone has pictures it would be helpful too.

thanks

It's not too difficult luckily... a small flat-blade screwdriver will be your best friend for this.

There are two small hex bolts (8mm or so... on my 98) just beneath the radio lip and above the fan... A/C... switches... etc.

Once you get those... you can take a small flat screw driver and gently pry the bezel from the dashboard. Unfortunately, if I remember correctly... the radio comes out with the bezel. You'll have to free the radio to get the bezel completely free.

You should then be able to get to the switches.
Unplug all of the connectors including the cigarette lighter... there are two phillips screws that mount the 3 switch plastic housing (fog, defrost, rear windshield wiper) to the bezel... loosen those to free the switches... then carefully unsnap the "unlighted" switches from the switch mounting housing.

The light bulb will then be exposed in a screw-twist socket... one for each switch.

It's difficult to describe exactly in words... but it's easier than it might sound. Good luck!
