I own a 1997 ford s\c. I had to have the engine rebuilt at 120,000 miles do to the sorry head gasket design as so many other people have had. I went to work one morning and everything was fine, when I went to leave work, I started my truck to hear loud knocking. I drove the truck to a local shop where I was informed that the motor had water in it, a valve was bent and the head gasket was blown around the #4 cylinder. Now I have found that this is not unusual for this Ford product. What a crock. I understand that Ford is aware that there is a problem but refuses to admit guilt or accept any responsibility at all. *edited by mod* I worry that although mine has been rebuilt, I will have the same problem in the future because it is still a 4.2 v-6. *edited by mod*
jcarker,
First off welcome to FTE! Glad to have you here and hope you find it helpful to you.
Second, take a few minutes to read the Forum Guidelines (link at the bottom of this page). You'll see why I edited your post.
Third, I (personaly) wouldn't worry about a repeat failure if you have had "the problem" and had it properly repaired. The GASKETS used were the culprits, not the engine itsself. You should be good to go. My 2000 has 108,000 miles on it and it has never had a problem - any problem. Just regular oil changes, air filters, and a set of plugs and plug wires.
I think you'll be OK.
Again, welcome to FTE.
(Joseph, thanks for adding the link. Good team effort there!)
Jcarker,
No problem with the post. It looks like it was your first, and quite frankly, I'd have been in a huff too!
The 4.2 gasket issue is - obviously - a well known problem. It is a shame, and as a Ford fan, almost an embarassment to me. But, nothing we can do about it. Too much water under that bridge by now!
In short, (IMO) there isn't squat you can do other than what you have already done. Get it fixed, with new gaskets and keep on driving it.
I have been very happy with my truck. It is - by far - the single most trouble free vehicle I have ever owned.
It has beaten other Fords, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Jeep, Toyota, Nissan, Lexus.
As a matter of fact, I have owned 3 vehicles long term that NEVER broke, EVER.

A mid 80s Ford LTD
So, I guess you have to lick your wounds and go on. Crappy I know! But, at least you know you aren't the only one (and that's pretty crappy too, isn't it!)
Joseph has that link in a pistol side holster, and is ready to wip it out in an instant.
He's absolutely correct. The first 2 years they made the 4.2 were in 97 and 98. That link that he provided will describe the problem in detail as well as how to fix it.
Other than that, there's not much more advice we can give on the situation.
I seem to have ruffled some feathers complaining about my 4.2. This was not my intent. I stated on another page that the truck has plenty of power and pulling capacity. I believe this to be true to this day. I feel like the 2 to $ 3000 that it is costing 97 and 98 owners could be offset by some sort of recall or something. Carker
No feather ruffling here J. We've all just heard so much of this complaint that it's a pretty common thing.
Your right, it is unfornate that Ford has not performed a recall. However, I have heard in many cases that if you complain enough to the dealer that they will fix it.
On the other hand, I love my Ford don't get me wrong, I would buy no other, but Ford service departments bite big time.
I NEVER take my truck to the dealer for service, even if I know it a warranty covered item. All they do is complain and read you the riot act and then they don't fix the problem correctly anyway.
I ALWAYS take my truck to someone else and PAY to have my, what should be, warrenty item fixed. Even though it costs me money, it's worth every cent to get it fixed correctly, and with a possitive attitude from the mechanic. Ford techs are idiots.

I agree with you on the recall situation. That's the problem with something new, you always have to get the bugs out. I'm something will be happening in the future with the new Fords, but who really knows right? I think you'll be alright from here on out thought...good luck.
