Leaving a diesel running

Is it better for the motor to leave it running if you are just getting out for a second? Or is it causing air pollution. I have driven a diesel truck for the past 10 yrs. and have always left it running (at the post office, etc), however, this morning I was informed of a complaint against me at the daycare my kids go to that a man was FURIOUS with me for leaving it running. I was polluting the air. I have always left my truck running because I was told years ago that it is harder on a diesel motor to crank/kill it? Is there any truth to that?

It's not recommended to let a diesel idel for too long. I usually let my truck idle for extended periods of time, and no harm has come of it. With my old 7.3L I ALWAYS would smell the diesel when idling, but with this new engine, it's not nearly as bad. (No black smoke either)

I would just leave it running if it is for short periods. I have my keyless entry on a quick release on my key chain so I can lock it while I leave and then keyless entry back in.
