i have a 1971 f100 it has a stock 302 with headers, intake, and unknown cam. Its comfortable to drive but it is no speed demon. The truck is in great shape and doesn't have one issue that I'm aware of other than just being a little lackluster in the power department. it has a fmx transmission and a 3.50 gear in the 9" rear end. I would like to get 400-450 rwhp with a small block preferably in 351w or a 351w stroker. it has power steering but manual breaks so I could go a pretty aggressive on cam but would still like to be able to cruise halfway comfortable(don't want to do a bunch of modifications for big block). would love to do an aod transmission so i could go down in rear end gear. im currently at 2100 rpm at 55mph so cant really go down anymore if i keep the fmx transmission. I've also heard conflicting information on what fmx can handle. I've called and spoke with crate engine companies and some online transmission suppliers and a if i buy an engine transmission package that fits where i want to be I'm looking at 13000$-19000$. is it possible for me to do this cheaper but with the same or better reliability as buying a crate setup? if it is cheaper maybe you guys could give me some suggestions of setups. I have never completely built an engine before but have changed cams, head gaskets and normal things like this. I have a pretty good local machine shop that would help me with things I'm not comfortable doing myself if I do decide to go in this direction
