Hello Ford masters I have a 2004 F-550 with a 6.0 lit engine, had to replace some parts and now ready to put it back together. But its been 2 years and I have no idea how to do all this and would like you all to help me reassemble this motor.
I have the engine upper end that need assembled, to start out with I need to put in some studs to replace the old bolts.
right now I need to know if I should put the rocker boxes on the heads first and if there is anything I need to know to do this?
If this were my engine after sitting open like this for 2 years, I'd be considering tearing it the rest of the way down and going through it again, making sure there is no rust anywhere. It looks like you didn't seal it up and left it sitting like this, and some of those cylinders are full of gunk that needs to be cleaned up.
Ok, why did you take it apart in the first place? What was wrong?
Cleanliness is next to Godliness when it comes to working on engines and other parts. Clean this thing. Very well.
What studs are you using? ARP I hope.
What head gaskets are you using? Ford or Fel-Pro I hope.
How flat and clean are your decks?
No, you can install several studs then start layering items. Such as head gasket, cylinder head, rocker box WITH new gaskets, pushrods, rocker arms, then the rest of your studs, washers and nuts. Then begin the torque sequence and tight it all down together.
Then your injectors go in.
Then your high pressure oil system logs go on with the stand pipes. Use new seals EVERYWHERE.
Then glow plugs.
Then valve covers.
And start adding "stuff" until you're done. And change your block heater NOW before you reinstall the engine. And get a new cord. That system is run at residential 110v A/C power and will kill you if there are any shorts and you complete a circuit with your body.
Be very careful, these bad boys are nearly a 1000 pounds assembled. Don't want one of these things falling on you.
Take your time and make sure everything is very clean and dry between your mating surfaces. Use assembly grease on high friction surfaces. Use new clean engine oil on other surfaces. B
At the very least, pull each set of lifters and inspect the rollers for damage. They are in sets of four in the guides. Don't mix lifter locations when doing this. One set of four at a time. Be advised the lifters may fall out of their holders when you remove them. So take your time and watch everything as you do. B.
