How does this work, like how would I service anything in it, it almost looks like it is hinged or something, does it just flip down or do you need to remove the entire box to work on it? What's with the cables attached to it?
And lastly, do I need to drill anything or should a 2014 e250 be ready for it to bolt right up?
It just takes a 13mm socket and a floor jack. Support the battery weight with the jack, remove all fasteners including the nut on the cables. Lower the battery down with the jack.
It helps to spray the threads on the battery hold down bolt thats visible at the bottom of the box if you need to remove the battery.
Use the jack to position the battery box on reinstall.
I saw that one of you lives in a probably salty area. I would consider using antiseize on all fasteners. The boxes are a real pain to remove (and reinstall!!) when everything breaks off because the threads are froze. Threadlocker works, too, so you don't have to "use" the cables.
I have the auxiliary battery box on my van too. I replaced the relay and the battery. It's nice for running a camping fridge in our van. I used a floor jack to remove the battery. I have a buddy that drops the box while hanging on the wires and does all the work while it's hanging. He can swap out the battery in 15 minutes. I am not as good. I drop the box with a floor jack. Much safer.
