Got a few more things to get before I start on my engine bay work. Since part of the planned work is to flush and replace coolant, I'm going to replace all of the coolanty hoses while the system is drained. I figure at 20 years and almost 200K, it's due even if they look good.
Before it is suggested I already have and am going to install a heater control valve. I am also installing a new thermostat, billet thermostat housing, and dual altenator upper hose. No ELC at this time because dad had already had new coolant, additive and a bottle of flush sitting on the shelf.
So I still need to get a lower radiator hose and heater hoses. Got a question about the latter.
RiffRaff shows motorcraft heater hoses at around $200 for the pair. That's not going to happen. Even through other sources the Motorcraft hoses are more than I am willing to pay. I have got no problem using a Gates or Dayco hose for this. The main difference I see aside from the brand name, is that it appears the Morotcraft hoses come with Quick Releases preinstalled.
Do I need to purchase new QRs to use with the new hoses, or can the QRs be removed from the original hoses and swapped over?
Thank you! Since none of the local parts houses seem to have the hoses available, I was actually loking at RockAuto. They've got the Quick Connects for like $8 each.
Now to figure out which of the hoses I actually need. They only list two hoses for ACDelco, but I'd rather not use them being a GM owned company. Three for Dayco, two versions of the heater to water pump (outlet) hose. Only listed difference is the quick connect inbcluded on one, but the picturews look different and the Alternate/OEM part numbers are different.
Wish they had Gates. O'reilly isn't showing gates available either. Might do a bit of web surfing and see if I can find them.
Call them Quick Connects because they sure as hell don’t relase quickly.
No kidding. My dad n I spent a good 2+ hours trying to get those stupid things off. Ended up cutting one off a piece at a time. Hose clamps for reinstall
YEARS AGO I removed MY original hoses-real pain in the a$$
I bought Gates replacements WITHOUT the quick connects.
Thats right-QUICK CONNECT-designed to be installed QUICK on the assembly line.
NO reason to re-install THESE hoses.....
Just use regular screw clamps.....

Just my experience: They used to have a Gates plant here(see my profile) & they still have major distribution here....
It would surprise you how much gates products were rebranded with the dayco numbers & was shipped out !!!
They do make a long release tool for the “quick connects”. I have one and Rock Auto was the cheapest for it as I was ordering stuff from them anyway. Off recollection, you have to push the opposite way you would think to release them.
While I would normally agree with replacing quick connects with regular clamped connections, the tubes coming out of the heater core are right at the firewall and made of really thin metal. I don’t know if I would trust li’l ol’ ham-fisted me (Alright not so li’l but I’m feeling cute, okay? Sue me) to hold a heater hose onto that stub of tubing right up at the firewall and tighten a hose clamp at the same time.
Thanks guys! I understand the argument both ways for the quick connects, but I think I'm going to keep them.

Yeah that. One is in stock, the other isn't. I'd prefer to order both from the same place at the same time.
Found another source, CARiD, for all of it and going to order in a bit. Not a fan of them, but they haven't done me wrong yet and prices are competitive with RockAuto. Another $120 sent into the ether for this project, probably a bunch more to go.

Actually, that wouldn't surprise me at all.
I don't have a problem using Dayco, run plenty of it over the years and never an issue. I figure a lot of their stuff is made by someone else and rebranded. The issue is trying to figure exactly who makes what.
Gates on the other hand, I figure they make most of their own stuff and I know it's good. Well at least most of their rubber stuff like belts and hoses. The hard parts may be someone else rebranded. (I could be wrong on all counts.)
Given the choice I'd rather spend a couple bucks more for the part with the Gates name. If Dayco is what is available locally when I need it, that's what I use. In this case both have to be ordered, so I'll go with Gates.
