Running board help!

OK guys, I am now at that point in the restoration where I am about to repair my running boards. Here's my dilemma; I bought a pretty nice 48-52 running board as a patch panel, but I am feeling guilty about cutting it up. Are there any people/places making patch panels?

I really hate to cut up a fairly decent running board..

Thanks!

There is no one that I have found that is making patches for them. I am also looking for some. If you have to cut them maybe you can share some bits and pieces with others to help repair theirs and ease your mind. Kind of a destroy 1 or 2 to save 6 or 8. Maybe recoup some of the cost buying the boards. I would buy the patches I need depending on the cost.

Thanks Charlie, I am going to give them a try before I chop into my spare panel.

I bought new running boards for my 51, so I have the old ones that are bent up and torn at the front edge and dented along the bottom edge. They are from a California truck so little surface rust is all they have.

I saved them as they are only good for patch pannels.

What part of the running boards are you needing? If interested please let me know and I can supply photos.

I found great big truck running boards (F2 - F???) to use on my F-1 panel truck. Panel truck and big truck boards are not exactly the same, but close enough. I gave away the old ones for a fella to cut up and make patch panels for his. Had I not found useable boards I would have found beat up ones to cut up for patch panels.

Where are you? I know where a couple of these trucks exist in a central Missouri salvage yard and burnettd01 (previous post) has some in California.

If your extra boards are that good, why not use them? LOL
Which parts of your boards need patching. Like others I probably have some old running boards laying around that could be cut up

LOL.... well.... you kinda busted me there! I bought it thinking it was going to fit my truck, but when it arrived I discovered that it was for a short bed truck! I may take you up on that offer, I'll let you know.

The panel truck running boards are the same as those that are on the flat bed trucks, F-1 to F-6. The only difference is there is a notch cut out of the back corner.

Johnny Barnes Salvage, Franklin, Missouri. At Booneville cross the MO River and go north on US-40/MO-5 almost exactly one mile. He's on your left as you're going around a righthand corner.

I thought that also. I'm using big truck running boards on Clarence (see avatar). The other difference is that the panel truck boards go up higher under the doors than the big truck boards do. In my case that didn't matter as the sill needed replacement anyway so it just all got fixed at the same time. I was surprised when I removed the panel truck boards that they weren't exactly like the big truck boards excepting that notch you referenced. I've perused the pix you linked to. The ones that came off of Clarence weren't exactly like those pictured.

I regret that in 1999 I let my body man scrap my old running boards. I was a member of this forum but FTE was in it's infancy. And we did not have the huge amount of knowledge that we have here now. I didn't know running boards could be patched to look correct. Mine were straight but had rust holes on top that were patched with flat steel on top of the ribs. They could have been fixed by a good sheet guy or used for patches. It's funny, I kept the hood, the dented left front fender and both rear fenders. I even saved the original Swiss Cheese grille and gravel pan and dented tailgate.

But I didn't save the running boards!

I have thrown away things that I held onto for years, then immediately needing them after they are gone! lol

If I can remember, I'll try to get out in my spare parts pile and snap a pic of my old boards. I'm currently at my Dad's house, he might have an old set of boards left over as well. I'll take a look in his yard in the morning.

If anyone has a drivers side running board or panels they are willing to cut out for a 55 F250 long bed I would appreciate it!

Here is mine.
