To me it’s not that it’s a valuable option, it’s that it is part of the package that has everything I want and you can’t remove just that option.
The release button on the dash is in a spot where I seem to manage to bump it sometimes. I only had it actually open on me once while I was moving the truck around the driveway.
My truck had a sticky tailgate and usually wouldn’t fall on its own when unlatched. I never fixed it and now realize it might have been a good thing.
My safety cable. I loop the 1/8" wire rope over the fitting for the tailgate cable. I like the little 'D' rings; will probably do that when (if) my new truck arrives. Tightening up the tailgate also sounds like a good plan. My tail gate has fallen a couple of times since I had the recall done.
I too was hoping this would be solved from the factory by now. Oh well, guess that was too much to hope for. It's sad we have to do this, but a new tailgate is about $2000 plus the damage done to your trailer. Ford should be ashamed that owners of $80k trucks are doing this.
PS: I tested the dash button and the key fob button with the truck in gear; neither one opened the tailgate. My dealer tried to tell me I was pushing the key fob button in my pocket; until I showed them it would not work and even if it did, it has to be pushed twice quickly.
My 2022 has done this 3 times. Twice in gear pulling out of my driveway. Apparently the recall did nothing. I would assume it would've been applied to my truck before I got it. I like the feature but it’s not worth this.
I upgraded to a bungee cord after this photo was taken. Too bad I wasn't using it last month when I was backing up my dump trailer, the tailgate went down and crunched against the trailer jack. Neat-o. PS: I had the recall done long ago, didn't help.
Any way to cut wires or something so only by pressing the open button on tailgate itself will it open. Never use in cab or remote to open tailgate anyway. Not one of Fords better ideas.
in many instances these trucks cost nearly as much as a house . youve got a bungee holding the tail gate closed and dont find that maddening ? i would be disgusted to say the least

One came with my 2019 and I hate it. Freezes up winters. More wiring to unconnect under the fram when removing. And most new trucks from ford are coming with it. And there is no manual release that I know of if the electrical goes. And we can't install a manual handle. Totally different shell I believe.
Any way you can pos a pic of that? My 2020 lariat doesn’t have the power tailgate but my 2022 lariat ultimate I ordered has the power tailgate and I’d rather have something like that on as a preventive when I’m towing my 5th wheel.
Mine is basically like mtnguy posted... just a bit tighter.

Yes, I do find it maddening and am disgusted. Almost as disgusted as I would be if the tail gate fell open and tore up my 5th wheel. Maybe I'll just use some bumper stickers and tape it shut.

You are assuming the in cab or remote button is causing the problem; I don't think so. Not sure if anyone knows what the real problem is. The Ford recall has them weather proof the connectors better, but we know that does not work. And why do new trucks have the same problem that a recall was issued for on older trucks? Any comments Ford?
Have had it in twice for this. First time they checked connections, 2nd time replaced latch and cleaned and waterproofed connections. Was good for a year now is opening on its own again. Have had the 2 rubber blocks replaced twice and 1 is gone again. Had very unproductive talk with dealer. They will look at but no warranty coverage
