Haven't hauled yet since both truck and trailer are on order but I will be hauling a 14k bumper pull toy hauler. I wanted the 7.3/4,30 combo but to get the gas with a 3" receiver I had to go dually. The 3" receiver is rated for over 2k tongue weight since this bumper pull has approx. 2 k of tongue weight.
If you have an F250 (as listed in your profile), going with 450/550 springs may not help much since payload will be limited by tires.
You're right on the tires, but if he's maxing out 6800 lbs rated (combined) tires with a bumper pull that's one hella tongue weight.
The 450 springs work pretty great if you take like every other leaf out. Highly recommend taking a flap wheel to the edges as well, since they're stupid-sharp from the factory causing each leaf wants to dig into the one above it - loaded truck won't notice it probably, but an empty one might. Overall result is quite reasonable empty ride, with little sag under weight. Factory leaves from those model years are just too soft, I've had I think 4 of them trucks and every one of them dropped height quite noticeably when the 10k flatbed was hooked up to the bumper even with nothing on the deck.
That curt seems nice, I was looking hard at the TorkLift hitch someone mentioned rated at 18k but 16 is fine and Curt is a little cheaper. Thinking of getting a solid forged piece that doesn't move with a gooseneck ball and an adjustable forged piece, thanks for the advice. For the rear, I'm most likely taking the bags out and swapping in some 450/550 rear springs.
Drawbar doesn't need to be forged, my B&W is just a solid chunk of 2x2 with a heavy tail welded onto it, if it's from a reputable company and has the proper ratings and is US-made it's good to go.
450/550 springs will make it ride like an empty dump truck on rubber blocks if you just bolt them in as-is. Thin the packs down and they work much better. Also heads-up on the 6 bolts that hold the springs to the frame, they're bigger than the 250/350 stuff so try to get them with the springs.
