I've got a 72 f250 camper special. Starting to get rust in that horizontal seam that runs the length of the bed -just above the side moulding. Starting to get bad enough that there are now pin holes in the upper portion of the sheet metal. It looks bad. Is there any way to stop this now that it has gotten this far?
Any kind of media blasting will remove the rust from the seam. You will need to braze/weld the holes shut then.....either weld the entire seam(like some have) or use seam sealer and paint over it again.
You may want to go to the bodywork forum and ask guys down there what they have done.
Go find a rust free bed. I had very slight seperation of the factory body putty ad very minimal signs of surface rust. I was repainting my pickup so I wanted to fix it right. I dug out all the putty and sandblasted the seam, cleaned it with bare metal acid prep, used epoxy primer and then reputtied the seam with the proper material. Three years later the whole seam had rust blisters the size of quarters. Granted, the Alaska winters are hard on vehicles but I don't know what else I could have done to make a proper fix.
that's the kind of stuff I wanted to find out. I was thinking exactly along the lines of what you described. Sounds like it's pretty much "game over" unless your remove the panels, clean em and then weld them back together.
thanks (didn't want to hear it) but thanks, beesker
