what brand replacement fuel pumps are people having good luck with? i'm going to replace the ones on my 96 f150 (302 powered). the front is working for now, but the truck has 247k on it, so it's just a matter of time.
Replace the entire FDM and not just the pump. Motorcraft is usually the best choice, but they are expensive and recently my buddy had one only last a few years on a truck that isn't even driven everyday. The last one I bought was a Spectra assembly from Rock Auto. Make sure the screws are tight on the float sending unit. Also, sometimes these require redoing the connector, but they usually include the alternate pigtail.
What's a FDM? Check the material of your "steel" bits there, the big round plate and the tubing - Ford used stainless on the Powerstroke diesels at least in 96 and 97, maybe gas jobs got it too? Personally I world absolutely NOT replace factory stainless parts with aftermarket regular steel even if it's galvanized. You can replace the pump itself easily enough, the fuel level sending unit can also be redone if needed.
Agreed - easier to replace the entire FDM. While I'm glad some other posters have had good luck with the SPECTRA brand FDM's, I unfortunately have not. I've had (2) Spectra pumps go out on me in about 4 years. My truck's tanks are new, so they didn't suck up rust or garbage. I started going with the DELPHI pumps and have not had a problem since.
Having graduated from the Fuel Pump School of Hard Knocks, I highly endorse using a Motorcraft FDM. If you like getting stranded and dropping your fuel tank after a junk pump fails in less than 1000 miles, by all means buy a no-name pump. And trust me, a lot of the "name brand" pumps are effectively no-name Chinese junk pumps. I don't know how you differentiate, so I just bought Motorcraft.

I would agree, Brad. No substitute for Motorcraft. However, on my early-20's just out of college budget, I gotta go no-name at times!
Has anyone ever tried to scrap the whole dual tank fuel system and install a bronco type system? Or an aftermarket single tank (38 gallon) and single pump. I've had a ton of issues with the fame pump selector and internal fuel pump assemblys, and was thinking about swapping to a larger single tank set up. I have an 87 f150 with a 4.9 and have used Motorcraft and aftermarket spectra and Delphi and they all seem to go out quickly.

If we could figure out who actually manufactures the Motorcraft pumps, that might go a long way towards buying them cheaper without the Motorcraft mark-up. I was patient (and perhaps lucky) with being patient until a found a Motorcraft FDM for $175.
FWIW, I'm usually NOT one who buys into the "Buy Motorcraft" pitch. In fact, that's why I initially bought some off-brand pump figuring, "I bet they're all the same". As I said, I learn the hard way.
Anybody ever used a Carter replacement pump? My NAPA parts guy sells them and swears they are top quality. I think my front pump just died. The engine just died while going down the road, switched to the back tank, and away we went. Now sometimes it will start and run on the front pump but surges. I haven't actually done the diagnostics yet, but I'm pretty sure it's a bad pump. I can't really pony up the Motorcraft money right now but sure would hate to change out the pump only to have the new fail right away. So is Carter junk too?
