People spec the block heater, plug in a 1,500 watt draw thinking they need them when it gets below 32 degrees.
Dealers push them and help create that fear. They’re a cheap option so not a big deal, but the electric they use, especially when they are really not needed? Yikes.
Just use a full syn oil that is temp stable and she’ll easily and safely start in any weather.
In certain parts of the cold world, plug-ins are provided at the parking meters because some genius calculated it was better for the environment. Recommend using block heaters below 20 degrees or so; maybe 0; can't remember exactly. Maybe that's old news. With synthetic oil, hard to say when the not-needed/needed point happens. Part of the preheat is intended to address the fact that cold-soaked materials get brittle and expand at different rates when heated. I admit to starting big diesels in the extreme cold using starting fluid, but they weren't happy and sent a lot of unburned fuel up the stack. Your mileage may vary; don't try this at home, etc.
