Only overdrive transmissions that will work with the 460 are the zf 5 speed and the E4OD. The zf 5 speed is pretty straight forward swap. The E4OD is and always was a electronic controlled transmission. You will need a aftermarket controller to make it shift. That will be about $500-$700.
What ever transmission he has he can run a Gear Vendors over drive he just can't use it in 4x4 mode.

Actually yes he can, if he gets the right one - they used to make one for E450 motor homes with 4r100 transmission and driveline parking brake, well the flanges and shafts geometry between said driveline brake and the transmission is the same as between a 4x4 transmission and its transfer case (that's why F-superduty trucks are good donors for 4x4 ZF5 transmissions even tho they're 2wd trucks). But GV units are hella expensive to begin with.

So you are saying with that transmission you can fit the GV OD between trans & transfer caseThe GV hanger off the back of a 2x4 transmission or the rear of a transfer case in a 4x4 as I don't think there is a way to bolt anything to the rear of the GV unit.
When you price out a ZF5 or the Auto OD transmissions and all needed parts to get it moving it might be cheaper going GV.
Any transmission you get unless its rebuilt, more money to start, they most likely need a rebuild.
That is what I found when looking to add over drive to my truck. I was lucky and got 1 of the last Advance Adapters Range Splitter.

I disagree. You know I am cheap. When I put overdrive in my truck, I looked at all the options, this was about 10-12 years ago. The gearvendors unit was going to be about $2800. An E4OD was going to be around $500-$700, plus a rebuild like you mentioned, plus a shift controller. It would be roughly the same as the gear vendor cost, but it would be more compact and fit better. Whatever your preference is. But the cheapest option for me was the ZF 5 speed. They were about $800-$1000 used. I bought a donor for $1000 and by selling parts off it, was able to defer my costs. I did roll the dice, and the trans I got from the donor did not need a rebuild.
If you found a donor with a E4OD, you may be able to do the same. All the older E4OD's need updating with a rebuild. If you can find a donor, you can save some money selling parts.
I think a lot has to do with where you are.
When I was looking 3 are 4 years ago ZF5 were all out west so had shipping and they were used so would need all the extras to fit it in a 81 F100. Could not find and used trucks to buy or transmissions near me.
So I had to pick between GV or AA RS, I went AA RS for $1700 to my door and love it to bad they stopped making it right after I got mine.
