Hey guys, I know that over the years various people have asked questions about adding tanks, building custom tanks, and so on. I wanted to revive the topic and ask a simple question in regards to the idea. Does anyone happen to know if the stock 55 gallon tank for the E-250 is a direct replacement for the 44 Gallon tank in the Excursion?
@MasterX it's fine for now, the range is not quite what I would like for "adventuring". The V10 only makes is about 450 miles. It would be nice to know for a future project and a lot cheaper than a "custom" tank.
Does the van tank reside in the same location as the factory EX tank? If so, how does its measurements compare to the EX tank? There really isn’t any extra room around the factory tank, it’s right up against the side frame rails and the hitch in the rear and the front goes nearly up to rear differential. The only direction that any extra capacity could fit in that area is downward, which will only reduce ground clearance, not the best thing for an overland adventure rig.
There was also a 50-gallon tank option positioned in the rear just like the Excursion. Not all of them have them but if it fits, then its the easiest option to get more fuel and range on board without the fuss of multiple and custom fuel tanks.
i dont see the trade off of doing a lot of mod work for 5 extra gallons when you can get a special bumper with fuel can holders, and put 10 gallons on the rear bumper fairly easily.
E series came with a side rail or a rear tank. The aft tank was 36 gallons while the rear tank was 50.
Ummm……..I think “aft” and “rear” both mean pretty much the same thing…..?
In the Econolines was the tank location, along the side frame or rear mounted, dictated by the van being a van body or cab and chassis?
i also am trying to figure out a way to add fuel capacity. Would love to add additional 40-60 gallons if possible.
I much prefer passing up $4.20 fuel for $3.09 when I get the chance.
Look up the Harpoon Mod. Get a pair of tube cutters from Harbor Freight, drop the tank, snip-snip, grab-grab, put it all back together, and you're good to go. You now have a 50-52 gallon tank instead of 44.
I've run mine down a few times and it's taken atleast 50 for the pump to click off.
Is it possible to put the side rail tank on and Excursion?
I’ve seen auxiliary tanks before simply have a fuel pump plumbed to the existing tank with the flip switch,
The main tank gets low on fuel flip the switch for a little while and voila, your tank is full again!
