Hello,
I am new here.
I am looking to purchase a 2011 F-350 with a Crew Cab. It just had a new 6.7 L Power Stroke Crate Engine installed in March 2021, so I am assuming it is either a 2020 or 2021 engine. I have asked the seller to provide a copy of the Motor Invoice and the Registration with Ford Motor Company as this is required in order for the warranty to be valid. The crate motor was not installed by a Ford dealership. The vehicle has 158,000 miles, but the new engine has only 2000 miles on it. It otherwise appears to be in excellent condition. The Ford dealership told me that the warranty would still be good at any Ford dealer, provided I don't bring it in for an installation related issue.
My question is this: Is the 6.7 L Power Stroke Diesel CRATE ENGINE good? Does it have flaws similar to the 2011 which could lead to catastrophic engine failure? Are there any upgrades that I would need to do in order to make it keep running without leading to a disaster?
Thank you,
Don

Reason: Typo
A Crate engine doesn't necessarily mean brand new engine. It could be a remanufactured from anything 2011 on up. Hopefully the invoice from Ford on the engine will tell the story.

My guess is this is precisely how they'll try to weasel out of covering anything. They'll say it's an installation issue.
Thank you. I will not buy it if it is remanufactured.
The other part of that regardless of age, is that a crate engine typically doesnt come with all the electronics, fuel system, etc. FYI, early 2011's manufactured prior to 03/2011 were known to have "weak" exhaust valves that could come apart. So much so, that engines built after that date had redesigned heads/valves. Given that this truck has had a long block put in, its likely that it suffered that problem, as the failure pretty much demolishes the cylinder that the failure occurred in. This may be why the current owner is selling. 2011's, and 2012's also had a turbo design that is problem prone if you are the type that would tune the engine. If you are looking for used, I'd be looking for 2015 or newer if your budget can swing it. Used prices are sky-high right now is the problem.
Thanks, appreciate the advice. I have decided NOT to buy it unless it is a new Ford engine. Several posters on YouTube have discussed the problem with the plasma technology they use on remanufactured engines, as Ford literally sprays coats of metal on the cylinders in an attempt to resurrect previously dead engines.
This comes with disastrous results. Most of them have advised people to never buy a Ford remanufactured engine.
Crate doesn't necessarily mean reman. I have a 2012 truck with a blown 6.7 and in speaking with my dealer and local repair shop, both would only install a new 2021 complete engine, which runs around $11k. As was stated earlier, fuel rail system mounted to frame may be original or they may have had to change it. If it's a dealer, and they are offering a warranty, as in 100,000 mi warranty than it's new. See if they will throw in the ford premium warranty which covers everything soup to nuts.
And, have they come up with original purchase paperwork?

I highly doubt the engine is a 2020 engine and doubt that it is even a new engine and not a rebuilt one. you should investigate further.
when engines are replaced cores are used that match the vin year of the original engine. your not going to get a gen 3 6.7 engine in place of a gen 1 engine.
