OK let's not get carried away. cornstar6207 has been on this site for some time with this and other Fords including an L9000. His posts have been both trying to keep the 6.0 going and trying to help others.
I would think anyone who has suffered the 6.0 would celebrate this moment for him. Unless you're the guy who bought it from him......
I can tell you the truth. There is no foreign made truck that will out perform the US truck makers. The market is closed ! Meaning the foreign makers cannot market 3/4, 1 ton, and up trucks.
I talked to a guy at a gas station. I was at the deisel pump as usual with my 6.0 bullet-proof. He pulled up at the other side with a Nissan what-ever that had a cummins V-8. He said the truck is not a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. It was a step between. Had a long bed. 2WD skinny tires. He said the truck cannot measure up to the super-duties.
Going back through his threads, he bought the truck used and promptly had to deal with a leaking EGR cooler (which we know can cause other problems!). Probably had an oil cooler issue when purchased also. Edit - and he had the typical issues with the high pressure oil system (leaking dummy plugs and standpipes, and bad "round" OEM HPOP).
To me this just emphasizes the criticality of due diligence when purchasing a used 6.0L. Also, emphasizes the importance of the new owner making 100% sure that the KNOWN engine weak points have been addressed (sadly not all owners know about the plethora of help on the forums). Finally, as is constantly posted here, the proper monitoring and proper preventative maintenance must happen.
Leave any of those out and you might find yourself posting a "good riddance" message.
I think another problem he had was with the brakes, but got traced that back to bad brake fluid being added if I read it correctly.
I didn't see much more than that, so I wonder if head gaskets finally went as a result of the EGR cooler problems, or maybe didn't address fuel pressure and injectors bit him, who knows. Hate to see it ...... the 6.0L can certainly "bite hard".
Thanks for all the replies. I have an old 2000 f250 farm/plow truck. It has the 5.4 gasser in it. I've always been a ford man, but when I look back at the last 20 years, my most reliable vehicles have been foreign, and my least reliable have been domestic. That said, I had a LOT of work done on my 6.0 in the 60,000 miles I owned it. EGR and oil cooler in the first 6 months. Just recently, both side exhaust manifolds, FICM, stand pipes, dummy plugs, and a new HPOP. Also, new glow plugs. I no longer trusted the truck to take it on a trip. One time it quit on me inside a car wash. ( I kid you not) I bought a Nissan frontier to pull my boat, snowmobiles, and haul tools and seed. I'll use my old gasser for the heavy towing. Don't get me wrong, I loved the 6.0 power, but was very disappointed with the rust and reliability. The freaking oil pan is rusting through!! Everyone talks about bulletproofing etc. In my opinion, Ford should have sold it bulletproofed. Peace out.
Yeah, I get the trust issue for sure cornstar.. Mine is also on it's "Last chance" status. Changing the crank position sensor, the ICP sensor and pigtail, now she starts and runs every time. For now. Holding my breath. I have put a lot of time and money into her this last year. It's and wait and see thing right now. I hate to get rid of her because I really like the truck. But if she starts leaving my on the side of the read it may be time to dump her and get a gasser. IDK. We will see.
We don't have rust issues here in Cali. Fortunately. I have seen some of the rust issue pics from other users here. Man, you would think for the money you pay for these things Ford would have done a better job of rust prevention. SMH. B.
I did it a little different. I found an 06 with a FASS fuel system, decent gauges, deleted, clean and straight. The catch was it had so much blow-by it looked like a locomotive when you pulled the oil cap off. So I bought it for what the dealer had in it. And I bought it with the understanding it needed a motor. It got a motor with all the essential stuff. That was 3 years ago. And 2 sets of injectors, a turbo, icp, ipr, standpipes, oil cooler, CAC couplings, radiator, water pump, ball joints, and power window switch later......but it's still in the driveway. As much as I've had to put into that truck, I forget about all of it as soon as I fire it up. My other vehicles get me to where I'm going, but when I take the truck, I ARRIVE. Not to mention the ranger just don't pull the 5er quite as well 😉
They certainly are not for the faint of heart. I bought mine with fair amount of work done to it along with fair amount of miles. I knew these engines were somewhat particular but I've always been meticulous about maintenance and it has been good truck minus the design flaws. I loved the rest of the truck and have no complaints, comfortable, good looking, but the motor issues just kept making me wonder what next. I unfortunately suffered a lifter failure and sold the truck to someone who has a shortblock ready to go in it. In a way it's bitter sweet, glad to get rid of it, but sucks it had to go out like that.
Looking forward to the next gen Superduty and the awesome power of the 6.7 and driving my trusty 7.3 until the new truck gets built & delivered.
Varminthunter, my problem was I didn't always arrive.
so far, in my 6 leaker experience, if I can get it started, I'm good. But I'd be a liar if I said my pulse didn't speed up every time I turn the key, wondering if it was gonna start.....
