Hi all, sorry for this dumb question but I have to be sure. With supposedly less then 2,000 miles after oil change is the oil supposed to be this BLACK ? I had a big rig with a Cummins and even at 7,000 miles my oil looked like the day I replaced it.
I believe the dealer just replaced the oil filter and never the oil.
Did you call the dealer and tell them your thoughts? I highly doubt a dealer tech would forget to change the oil during an oil change.
I doubted it also but I just bought this truck and the service really sucks. I don't think they forgot, I just think they probably just said screw it. I took the truck in yesterday for a "pulling right" and the tech in front of the "inside person" told me he changed the tires from side to side. Which wasn't true. The truck was on the alignment rack. The only reason I found about the oil is I was replacing the cheap oil filter they installed for a motorcraft one.
Oil can turn black in a diesel very quickly so it probably was changed.
I didn't think it would be as black as it is with less then 2,000 miles driven. it kinda looks like a gas engine oil when it is way passed the 3,000 mile mark.
Some dealerships try to pass off less expensive aftermarket parts to increase their bottom line
In other words they charge you full retail even though their cost is LESS
yes sir, that's why I took a picture of it. I was also hearing about how they are running low on rotella and that might be one reason why they didn't change the oil. I am waiting on the previous owner to answer me. We were in contact before I bought the truck.
Thanks for all the responses, I'll keep an update on here.

I will chime in here, relating to my '02 7.3, and yes, on mine and the 3 others I've had, 1,000 miles after a change they looked like that, first oil change on my 99 I was asking around, got no answers, after having my 99 look like that after every change, then my 02 Ex, my 01 F350 and my 02 F350, I spoke with my mechanic at the company I worked for at the time and he said the 7.3's still have a decent amount of old oil in them after a draining, HPOP, block and heads. Whether that true or not, I have no idea, but on all my 7.3's they looked like that after an oil and filter change. Now my work truck, '15 cummins 3500, it never looks as bad as my 7.3. I can't speak for the 6.7's as I've never owned one or worked on one.
Thanks again for the quick responses. I have done a bit of research and yes, although the oil turns black that doesn't mean that it is bad.
Again thanks to all for your advice from a newbie to diesel vehicles.

I will chime in here and say this: On both my 6.0's, the oil would turn black as coal almost immediately after an oil change, when I first got them (presuming they'd been run on dino oil). After a couple years of T6, though, they wouldn't turn black until about 3500 miles, I presume because at each oil change I was getting it down to a lower and lower percentage of dino oil in it.
It was ALWAYS black at oil change time, around 5k miles.
