I would love to get the PSD, BUT IMO the money doesn't justify the means for me. I don't tow anything, actually the last thing I towed was a 16' ski boat (before that I can't remember). Also, I don't keep vehicles very long 3-4 years tops. Is the main reason you guys get the PSD for towing/hauling and little better mileage OR is it because its a better motor over the 5.4/V10?
So if I'm getting a F250 CC WITHOUT the PSD, what motor should I get. Is there a BIG difference in power/gas mileage b/w the 5.4/v10?
How many of you guys are running the 5.4 OR V10 in your SD CC with lift and big tires? Ultimatly, I plan on going with a 6-8" lift and 36-38" tires. Of course I plan on changing the gears and adding some performance items to recoupe power from the tires.
Sorry for asking more questions, along the same lines, I just can't make up my mind.
you say your planning on putting on some aftermarket stuff and souping it up right? are you going to do this and still get rid of it in 3-4 years? I think the PSD engine is a workhorse, but if you don't pull and aren't going to keep it very long, then I would say the extra money is better spend somewhere else. I just never have been able to be comfortable with the idea of a 5.4L in a CrewCab Superduty... I had one in a F150 SuperCrew and while it was adequate there, I don't think I would want one in a truck that is so much heavier.

Yup, I tend to get trucks do what I like to them, stripe them back to stock and sell them. Not the smartest thing to do, but it works for me. Thanks for the FYI on the 5.4, I was thinking the same thing.
I have a 2000 F-250 5.4L 4X4 and it does just fine. I put on bigger tires and did a few mods to it and it gets about 15MPG. I have pulled a travel trailer with it and that was about the only time I wished it had a V10 in it. If you are not going to pull anything big that catches a lot of wind I think you would be OK. Just my 2 cents.
I dont know, I have the 5.4 in a CC, ues it for work and play.
Did several things to it, it runs well and gets better MPG's then my friends V-10 and stays right with him.
Don't get me wrong, the V10 will pull some big stuff but everyone I know that has one claims that they know so many gas station clerks that their wifes think that they are having affairs! Truthfully though I bought mine thinking of cost and there are times where I wish I would have bit the bullet and went with the V10.
I had a 2001 F150 supercrew 4x4, loved it but wanted the diesel to haul stuff, so got the F250 6.0 PSD. Just curious, but if you don't tow stuff, or haul stuff, why get the 250? The F150 will cost less, get better mileage and (at least where I live) you won't need a class D commercial license to drive it. In Fla, the DOT can stop you and ask to see your commercial DL and inspect your truck, sample fuel, etc if you have over 8000 GVR.
Had a 99 F250 V10 5 speed 4X4 SC with 4.30's and 305.70.16's. Average mpg was 11.0-11.5. I tried everything in the world to get better mileage out of it. I do not understand guys getting 15 or 16 out of a V10. It has two more cylinders to fill. Everyday driving does not seem to burden the 5.4 in any way. Power was good (it was the 275 hp version). Now have an identically optioned F250 with the 5.4 auto and 3.73's. Just returned from a roadtrip and got 15 mpg. I average a solid 2.5 mpg better than my V10 in the same driving. I do not regret the 5.4 at all. If I were towing heavy, I would have went for the PSD. I drive mine everyday in WV and the 5.4 pulls the interstate hills fine. I would not want to put anything larger as far as tires go than 285's with the 3.73's. If I lived somewhere flat, I wouldnt hesitate going for 305's. The 5.4 will easily spin the non limited slip rear tire. Feels strong down low, but runs out of wind at higher speeds.
I bought mine with the 7.3 for the extra mileage and longer motor warranty since I average 30,000 miles a year and planned on keeping it till the wheels fell off.
An added bonus popped up when the pipeline busted here 3 months ago - long lines for gas, no lines for diesel. Gas hit $3.50 if you could find it and diesel stayed about $1.69/gal - I figured that month alone I saved $350 in fuel, not to mention stress.
On average diesel is 20 to 30 cents per gallon cheaper, so my mileage only saves me about $475/yr. May not be worth the $4000 extra even in a used vehicle if you're only gonna keep it a couple of years
The 15-16 I get on the highway is with 70 psi in the tires (stock firestone 285s) and keeping it right at 70 mph (which puts me just below 2000 RPMs). Also, This is pure highway - fillup at the top of the entrance ramp - get on I40 east in Cary, NC - drive to Wilmington, NC - fillup at the base of the exit ramp - calculate my milage (the same is true for the return trip).
To get this kind of milage, I have to use a light foot - accelerate slowly, take advantage of hills (speed up going down and let gravity slow me back down going up), try to follow somone to let them knock a hole in the wind for me (and I am careful to not get too close - wife won't let me anyway), etc., etc., etc.
The proverbial egg between my foot and the accelerator...
Once I get off of the interstate, my milage quickly drops to the 12-13 city milage I reported above.
I carry about 500 - 600 lbs of tools and other junk in my truck plus the wife and myself.
I make this trip roughly once a month and the story is always the same.
Like I said above, I am REALLY pleased with my truck!
