Identify Transmission
I have a 1989 f150 4x4 with a 302 swapped in and a manual 4 speed with overdrive also swapped in and I'm having trouble identifying the transmission due to it not being the original transmission. I'm not sure where to look to find what I have. Any help?

Is your transmission a 4 speed OD or a 5 speed?
4 speed OD can be in one of 3 configurations, all based on the performance "top loader" 4 speed from the '60s.
Iron case, side mounted linkage, should have "RUG" on the case, compared here to the original performan trans:
Toploader Imposters
SROD, the Single Rail OverDrive, also seen in Mustangs and other cars with slightly different ratios. Aluminum case:

In my Chilton manual it says to give it Mercan atf.
that doesn’t sound right to me would you happen to know if that’s correct?

ATF is the correct fluid for an M5OD. Anything thicker will make it impossible to shift and might even cause damage.

Check the 3 plugs on the top cover. They are known to dry out and leak.
If you have shifting issues, the top cover does come off and the shift forks can be replaced if need be.
