97 F250HD 7.3 diesel, getting the infamous tc slipping error intermittently, now that weather has turned colder I have not seen it in some while, when it does come up it can usually be reset by removing the F9 fuse in the power distribution box, waiting a minute or two then reinstalling. All the transmission shops want to either replace the transmission or rebuild it, not really diagnose and determine what it may need, this includes ford dealers, actually most dealers don't even want to work on this truck because of age. The shifter itself is sloppy not sure how to adjust it, but wondering if this could be attributing to the problem or what the experience of this group suggests, should a TC replacement be all I need, or is a rebuild really in order. When I pulled the pan, the fluid looked very good, no indications of issues and virtually no metal in the pan. The drive train is all original at 159000 mi.
Usually, it's just the converter. E4OD converters had problems with the torque converter clutch apply piston cracking. This allows some of the pressure that should be holding the clutch on to leak past the piston. Then there is less pressure holding the clutch on, and it slips.

Which begs the question, will a standard replacement TC be sufficient, several have told me I should upgrade to a billet TC, which is twice as expensive but if a big improvement then I should do it, as I do not intend to get rid of this truck
The outer case of the converter is really not the problem. The problem was a bad design of the apply piston inside the converter. The question is if the billet converter improves on that part or not. I don't know what they do with the aftermarket parts. a 4R100 converter has an improved piston.
