it kinda bugged me at first, but i think it would take a good hit to get it to rupture inside, and there are enough holes below the gas tank that i think it would drain out to the ground quickly too. i don't have the fuel smell in the cab so that not a bother. only thing that bugs me is the slosh sound when off-roading.
oh yea but now the tank is rusted in the inside from over the years and clogs my fuel filters, so i think i will change it to under the bed style when i replace it.
Guys. The idea of the tank being more dangerous due to it's location had occured to me although I've never heard of it being a problem or of a case of explosion? Have you?
Also, I don't know why you'd smell gas? The tank is just as well sealed as if it were located in the bed like on a modern truck, but then again I've never owned one so who knows.
Federal vehicle safety regulations have mandated for years that the tank be OUTSIDE the cab. It's just too dangerous inside- if it should rupture and leak, then the fuel comes in contact with a broken or arcing wire- I don't even want to think what that would look like. Instant Toasted Family, I would imagine.
So in other words, if I'm looking for buy a '73 to '79 Ford truck I would do well to steer clear of the years where the gas tank would be integral to the cab!
I am looking at a photo of a red '74 4x4 F250 Crew Cab and I see a silver gas cap on the cab just behind the second door on the driver's side. I do NOT see any inlets in the side of the bed??
just so you know, these tanks can be easialy relocated, so if you find a good truck with it in the cab still give it a look, it only cost maybe 150 bucks max to relocate it. thats including a new tank.
Texan your's is in the cab! One of my neighbors has a 76 and its under the bed. I was under the impresion that from 73 up was under the bed, I guess it varied there for a few years as far as location. , Oh well learn something new every day.

i thought the same thing. untill i found this truck. i think it was just a matter of trim packages and options. i don't think Ford had any method to it's madness.
any ideas on how to fill the hole after i relocate it? and how to add a new filler neck to a Stepside box?

If you can weld you can tack in a piece of metal to fill it. On your stepside bed i have seen them mounted under the fender but if you want it on the outside get one of those billet fuel doors for it. IMO they are cool looking.
