Hi! I just bought my first Bronco, an '89 XLT and I love it! However, the brakes on the front driver's side tend to lock up (scaring the crap out of me when it happens). I'm a total novice when it comes to auto repair, so my questions are:
1) What is most likely causing this?
2) Would it be easy for someone with little experience to fix?
3) If so, can you point me to a good referenced that will walk me
through it?
does it require excessive brake pedal pressure to stop the truck when this happens? first thing i would check is for a leaking caliper on both sides of the front, and the brake pads on teh front, and the condition of the rotors. (gouged and grooved up is bad .. smooth and flat is good) If all these seem fine, or even if they are bad, i would then proceed to check the rear brakes. Also, while checking out the brakes, check the rubber brake lines for signs of being colapsed or rotting, and the steel lines to see if they are pinched somewhere. You do not have anti lock front brakes, so that takes a lot of the challange out of diagnosing this problem. I would be very thorough in this examination, because brakes are very important. Its one place you dont want to cheap on.
Thanks for the tips, I'm going to check it out this weekend if the weather permits. I may end up putting on new brake parts all around. I'll be taking the Beast up and down some steep hills off-road and I want to be able to trust my brakes.
for the last 10 years on my truck, if it wet/ damp out side my brakes will lock up or grab really hard with little pressure on the pedal. But after all the moisture is off they work regualr again.
Got my brakes fixed (finally!). New calipers on the front and new brake lines. They seem to work great now. Thanks for the tips on what to look for. It's nice for those of us who don't have much mechanical knowledge to have a place to go for answers.
