was it a stock engine or was it built that's the thing
Was a bone stock 400 Ram Air IV out of a freshly flipped (flipped ... like in wrecked) '69 GTO that we put in my '65 GTO, only the carb, intake, and headers were what we already had in the '65. It happened at the drag strip one Sunday afternoon, in 3rd gear as I recall. Towed home with a Plymouth SW and tow bar, we had it cruising by night fall. No damage to pistons and we had spare parts including a fresh set of the same heads. It was a good runner.
I’m guessing if anything the piston kissed the valve and knocked the carbon off. Had the gear break off the cam on a 351M/400 with a bracket master cam in it, the piston kissed the valve but didn’t bend it. I’d probably just replace the timing set, do a compression test and go from there.
UPDATE
I tore down the top end of the engine and found there was no valve or head damage. No piston to valve contact either. I cranked the engine several times with the cam and crank disconnected unknowingly so there's no doubt that this engine is non interference. Successfully replaced cam and runs great. More power because the old cam lobes we're pretty worn down. So 460 with E7TE EFI heads and stock cam is not interference.
